Hi folks
I would like to ask your help. Nearly all the life I deal with the sculpting figures, but when it comes to painting, I'm just a passionate admirer of this art, this skill unfortunately I can not. But the wonderful pieces that are on display here at PF tremendously inspiring and encouraging to me to me that I also tried.
I'm not without experience entirely, I painted in my life 7 figures already:ROFLMAO: . I used to use synthetic color (Humbrol) and oil for shading. The results were not good, although at that time I was proud of them. Just for an idea I attach a photo of my two painted figures, this is a scene from the Battle of Wogastisburk, depicting the struggle between the Slavs and the Frankish warrior. Figures I sculpted and painted for a private collector a a long time ago.
Now I would like to start doing this art intensely, even if I have free time minimum. However, I want to learn to paint with acrylics. For synthetic and oil paints bothers me quite a smell of paint, thinners and turpentine. In addition, acrylic really attracts me, it seems to me that working with him is faster (it's not that I want to rush painting, but with oil it was sometimes disastrous time, and I like when the work goes well.
We are currently preparing and studying all kind of materials available. On the net there are plenty of articles and videos with the procedures and techniques, and I have some literature, so a seemingly I have sufficient information, but I would like to ask you whether it is something you would be able to advise me how to start, what be careful, what devote increased attention, and so on. I also would be very interested in advice and procedures related to metallic surfaces (armor, weapons, etc). Some figures here on PF are absolutely incredible when it comes to metal surfaces armor, especially patina and shading. I am not interested NMM, rather work with real metallic colors and their shading and patina. About that I could find almost nothing to help me somehow.
For each of your reply I will be very grateful. I will be grateful should also be in link for relevant videos or tutorials for beginners.
Thanks to all:)

Cheers Borek

Hi Carl. Thanks a lot:) . The article I see, of course, but the video I don't . Thank you. See the procedure is always better than a photograph. Thank you very much(y) . Cheers Borek

I saw that some painters use as a primer bright, mostly white, and other painters use black. Does it have any importance or is it the preference of each painter, chooses what color? Cheers Borek

It's down to preference really I use grey, white and black primers sometimes all on one figure. I use the black mainly for work which contains a lot of nooks and crannies which might get missed by a brush, grey in general and white for lighter colours.

Hi Borek,

I am like you, starting to work with acrylics after using for centuries enamels and oils.Although I am not planning to substitute oils for face painting,as in my hands work better than any other mediums, but acrylics have fantastic properties.
I would recommend to attend to you tube the videos for painting miniatures with acrylics(e.x Michigan toy soldiers), Danillo Cartacci's tutorial, Diego Ruina's etc.
Also try this: http://giovannimodelling.blogspot.ae/search/label/tutorial.
If you know French ,then try http://kws.figurines-tv.com but even if you don't know French it is great source.
Another excellent source is : http://www.planetfigure.com/pages/Painting-with-Acrylics-by-Fernando-Ruiz/
I recommend also this: http://cursedmonkeys.com/?page_id=4108&lang=en.
An interesting technique is presented here : http://blog.naver.com/hecklerkoch.
In terms of books I strongly recommend the Scale model Handbook series (1-9 so far) from Mr. Black Publications and my favourite book is Danilo Cartacci's book , a real treasure.
Very useful also is the book 1500 colour mixing recipes for oil, acrylic and water-colour from William Powell.
Most important though is the vast amount of pictures , articles and comments in this site!
Hopefully you will find something useful.
Keep Modelling!

Really liking this thread, thanks for creating it Borek and many thanks for the links guys. I am a fairly recent returnee (real word?) to the world of modelling and all these hints and tips are really helpful. I've done a few, what I consider, practice figures over the last few months but now feel that I'm ready to 'do it for real'. It's nice to see that even experienced modellers (you're clearly an accomplished sculptor, judging by the pics Borek) are not afraid to ask for advice and also nice to see the helpful replies and not a single condescending remark. It makes me feel proud to be a (small) part of this community :)

Anyhoo, that's my tuppence worth,
Billy.

p.s. Regarding the painting on your figures Borek, I would be over the moon with them if they were mine.

Billy :)

Thank you very much, guys, for your hospitality and support. Some of your referral links I acquainted, but most do not. It's great to be in a community where many of you are willing to help. I do not know much about this before, with a few exceptions. Thank you very much everyone. I'll leave this thread open, from time to time, obviously I turn to you with advice to help with specific problems need to be. Again, thank you very much to all of you:)(y) .

To Eludia: Thanks so much for your praise. Like you, I am also fascinated by many great artists and their creations here on PF. So good luck to you at work;) .

For All: A lot of happiness and fun for all the good souls at PF:)

Borek, you are not alone we are here to help and anything just ask ok!

Pedro.

I am with Borek, fairly new to painting figures with acrylic, though not nearly as advanced as he is, based on his figure above. I have seen lots of books and videos on painting faces and shading clothing and skin tone, and I am using them as I still have a lot to learn in that regard. What I cannot find are instructions on painting small, precise details. There is a 54mm Iwo Jima Marine by Andrea painted by SPrimeau elsewhere on this site that has USMC printed on his shirt - I am happy if I can get four distinct dots to represent the letters. I also did Andrea's 54mm Roman aquilifer, which has a geometric design of very precise arrows on the shield. Please forgive me, but I cheated and printed something off from the internet and pasted it on, as I had no idea how to paint such a design. Any videos or books out there that would give directions like this? Painting very straight lines, small letters, unit patches, etc?
