Hi everyone

It's my honour to promote this

FIGURE ARTISTS for NHS

WHAT IS IT ?

‘Figure Artists for NHS’ is the idea of Neil Kilshaw ( KILSH here on PF ) and Robin Snelson as a way of generating financial support via the UK Figure Artist Community for NHS workers during the current pandemic.

The chosen charity we wish to contribute to is

https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/NHScharities-COVID19URGENTAPPEAL

Which is NHS endorsed and uses the ‘Just giving platform’ as a method of contribution, in summary it will help those involved in caring for Covid19 patients nationwide with the extra costs which they are incurring.

We think it best to use an established ‘Just giving’ charity option rather than creating our own and all money will be paid directly to it by buyers who will receive a receipt via email of their payment.

WHY ?

The current pandemic is affecting everyone’s lives globally. We are seeing many social media post of people saying that they are bored or feel useless stuck at home. However are also noticing a distinct increase in the amount of figure modelling people are doing. You could say many of us have been self isolating for years due to the nature of our hobby. It just occurred to us that we could use the time we have at our disposal to give something back to the wider community using our skills and hence the idea was born.

HOW WILL IT WORK ?

We are asking the UK figure artist community initially via our contacts and then by asking those interested to pass onto their own contacts in the wider UK figure Artists community to participate by donating a figure for auction and to pass on the word to their contacts both artists and, most importantly, any collectors who they know to visit the ‘Figure Artists for NHS’ FB page.

The page will go live on 14th April and the auction will close at 8pm on Sunday 17 May. Artist can post their submission up until Midnight Friday 15 May. This allows us some time to review all the pieces on offer. Interested buyers simply visit the page and state a financial bid in UK £s. Buyers can bid as many times as they wish to in the selling period. At 8 pm on Sunday 17 May the highest bidder will have won the piece.

On Monday 18 May we will confirm who has won each piece to the bidders

From then they will make a PayPal payment of that value to the just giving page. Once they have received the email confirmation of payment from the just giving page they can forward that to the seller with us on copy and the seller can release the piece. As time is of the essence there will be a firm payment window of 24 hours from notification of the win to pay. If payment is not forthcoming the piece will be offered to the next highest bidder. Artists may set a minimum bid value as they list their piece if they wish, we just ask that people are reasonable with this as the aim is to make cash available for the Charity quickly.

Artists and sellers may not already be friends on FB and to enable messaging between them the Buyer will need to send the artist a friend request to enable messages to be seen. We suggest that the buyer is responsible for shipping costs for which they will have to make a separate PayPal payment to the artist.

We will publish a sticky re packaging of models and shipping shortly.

WHAT ?

Any figure or figure related model is ideal, any scale, busts, full figures, historical or fantasy. Preferably nicely based, which will also help in packaging. Just be realistic, you will have a month max to complete. A foot 54 mmm figure ready on time is much more valuable to us than a 120 mm mounted figure ready a day late! Resin cast are easier and safer to ship than white metal because of the weight involved.

Alternatively if you don’t think that you will be able to produce something in time you can always donate and already completed piece.

We would really like to see sculptors get involved as well as painters by creating a small unique piece in the raw for auction.

It’s simple to add something for auction, just click on the ‘write something’ box as you would on any FB post and upload your donation details and photos, min 4 max 10. You can also state a minimum bid value for your piece at that point too.

Dealers and Manufacturers

Whilst the concept was originally to produce a piece of art which as well as hopefully creating some Financial support and help to avoid boredom plus give a sense of purpose for artists we would be remiss I’d we didn’t ask our friends in the commercial side of our community to get involved, so we will he also for donations of kits to auction.

FAQs

Q. Why are you only asking UK artists and dealers for input?

A. Covid19 is a pandemic and we think it would be inappropriate to ask artist and traders in other countries to support this NHS and therefore UK based appeal for support. Of course if they wish to contribute we will happily accept. Also if this works well we will be delighted to share the concept with Artists in other countries who may wish to undertake something similar. Please note we are not restricting the involvement of collectors to only those UK based and would ask that you extend the invitation to involve to any international collectors whom you may know.

Q What if my piece doesn't sell?

A. like any art figure art is very subjective and perhaps the right buyer for your piece wasn’t involved. Collectors can of course be very picky and rightly so it’s their money and they want good quality for their collections. It may even be an opportunity for you to get some feedback from one of the more accomplished artist taking place.

Q. Why just figures how about other modelling genres, armour, aircraft ships etc

A. This is quite a big undertaking for the 2 of us and our contact and knowledge base is very much in the figure community. However we would be delighted to share the concept with modellers in other fields if they would like to undertake something similar.

Q. I’m an essential worker and just won’t have the time to produce new piece in a month but really would like to get involved. Can I donate something I have already completed?

A. Of course you can.

Q. I don’t feel comfortable with offering my work for sale but would really like to be involved, is there anything else I can do?

A. Yes, why not consider donating a kit form your stash to the project, all we ask is that is complete and in good condition.

Q Can I do the more than 1 piece?

A yes of course, just use a new thread for each one.

Q. Wouldn't it be easier just to donate a kit rather than create a painted figure?

A. Yes it would, however this is all about raising money and creating a piece adds value and is therefore more valuable. Although we do approach Ethan not everyine will be able to price something in the timescales , that’s why we have the option of DONTING an already completed piece or a kit.

Q Do you need any extra help with admin etc

A. Currently some extra help on some aspects of the project would be gratefully received, please contact one of us to discuss if there is something with which you could assist

Although my painting skills are not top drawer enough to attract bids, I'm donating some kits to this very worthy cause and may be adding a few more later.

Do check out the Facebook page ! There are some rare kits on offer but also consider buying something that you might have bought anyway - and supporting the NHS in the process.

It is a great idea but the FB page requires FB login, and this severely limits the availability of the page.

I thought long and hard before I posted. I will not be donating or bidding anything towards this. While the NHS do a good job, they are NOT the only people involved with this current crisis, but the PR machine is in over drive. If this was going to everybody involved from drivers, to packers , to the other emergency services and so on then yes I would.

It certainly is Sergei and as much as I like the nice lady who drops of my Amazon packages I hope if I get ill, (and any of us could with this, that’s the thing) I hope it’s some of Carl’s mates who show up and not her to help me.

Perhaps there is some ignorance about the purpose of the appeal. All of our essential workers are doing a great job, binmen, drivers, farmers, packers, supermarket workers etc but non are putting their lives and the lives of those that they live with at risk to the the extent out health workers are.

They are working longer and extra shifts and incurring extra costs as result of this, such as travel, subsistence and the need to stay in hotel close to work, to use a word which was used to describe my proposal to help when it was privately floated on PF last week it is ‘problematic’ for them.

The repsonse of the appeal has been immense and still growing, we will have our auction site live hopefully later today thanks to the hard work of a couple of dedicated friends working with me.

As always in this life there are those that do and those that don’t.

If FB is a problem for people let me know here and we will see if we can work around it.
