This is a 120mm Verlinden figure painted up as a Swiss Neuchatel Battalion voltigeur. Oils. Still need to do his leggings and boots, pack, and water bottle - and of course some weathering. I plan on putting him in a field of tall grass.

Looking good (y)

But, you may find it interesting to re-visit the thread about the colour of their tunics:
https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/sapeur-neuchatel-battalion-1809.205624/page-2

Geoff's final version: https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/sapeur-neuchatel-battalion-1809.205624/page-5

But, as Nap said to Tonton "... it's your model you paint him the colour you like."

So if I read the thread correctly folks conclude the color is a more faded yellow. Too late for me. I have gone with the more orangish yellow seen in prints and other references. I first came across photos of a reenacting unit out of Russia and the colors intrigued me. I did not know about the Neuchatel Bn before. In any event, I will be comfortable with the thought that with this unit there may be no wrong value in the tone. I do agree with the quote about within the same unit you could see all kinds of variants. In the ACW that was true too once wear and tear in the elements set in.

Hi MRS

Good to see Verlinden being painted , personally I would tone the yellow down but that's me

Pose is a little static but in your proposed basework but will look good

Look forward to more on this

Looking good, but I agree with Nap - too yellow. I would follow the colour of the actual uniform in the thread and which Geoff used. Not too late - you can paint over the yellow with the more muted tone.

Cheers
Chris

Very colourful piece and looks like you’re off to a really nice start. Looking forward to seeing this progress.

There has been a bit of discussion here lately about the true colour of this battalion. I think what it boils down to is: take your pick. There are arguments in favour of a strong colour and equally convincing ones for faded or lighter ones. For myself, I recently completed a Chronos Grenadier and am happy with the orangey-yellow shown worn by photos of re-enactors.

Yes, I too have seen the discussions. What got me started with this was the Russian reenactor photos. I loved the look of the green against the yellow, and I think it will be more interesting once I have the tall grass (more green) to contrast with the yellow. So I acknowledge it might be a paler yellow, but there is enough reference to suggest it could have been the brighter yellow depicted here.

No matter which painters choose as long as you enjoy the benchtime and your result

Happy benchtime

...there is enough reference to suggest it could have been the brighter yellow

The problem is that many references are later than the actual period (eg Knotel was 1857-1914- though he used a subdued rather than vivid yellow) and there's a tendency for mistakes (aka received wisdom) to become self perpetuating over successive generations of artists (similarly see the gradual lightening of imperial blue and the discussion ref mounted sappers' axes... or not?).

Unless by a freak of nature/chemistry all the existing Neuchatel uniforms and those in the print shown here and here have faded by exactly the same amount, then I'd go for a duller chamois style colour. The Bosset portrait shows a slightly darker shade, but still not a bright 'canary yellow' hue and may simply reflect a higher quality cloth.

This of course doesn't detract from the quality of your painting :)

The colour guide posted by Bob is useful:

BTW: the musket has one too few rivets on it as well ;)
