I think this is generally off topic compared to most of the posts on this forum, but I saw a couple of other great hockey related posts from a few years ago, so I thought I'd post this here. I'm working on this sculpt in Super Sculpey Firm and the figure is about 6 inches from head to toe. There's still lots to do with the gloves and pads needing final shaping and then the overall figure needs final smoothing. It gives me something to work on while I watch the NHL playoffs .

While this is my first post I've been a long time fan of the work on this forum and I'm constantly amazed at the quality of the work on display....in fact this forum inspired me to start sculpting about 6 months ago and I have caught the bug in a bad way, picking up something to sculpt whenever possible.

thoughts and advice are always welcome, and thanks for viewing!!

First off, welcome! I do enjoy watching hockey but I have to say I know little about the equipment you have portrayed in regards to accuracy for example, but I'll say the jersey (?) looks pretty good! The folds are subtle and give the instant appearance of being draped over the protective padding. The only thing that could improve this to my eye would be to have a more dynamic pose? He is a little static, but I guess he stands like this for most of the game huh!

Looks great to me! If this is where you are after only 6 months...........look out! You should be turning out masterpieces in a short while! Nice work here, I might be a tad biased as a hockey fan though...........thanks for sharing!

Welcome to Pf and your first postings. This site is not just limited to historical/ miltary figures, so work on subjects that interest YOU. There are other members that have an interest in sports figures so I'm sure you'll find plenty to share. ~Gary

PS, Nice job on the sculpt.

It looks really good. The folds are really nice. Did you have a particular goalie in mind? If I had to guess, I'd say Brodeur because his pads are kind of old school since he's not a pure butterfly goalie.

With all the TV coverage for the playoffs, you're set for sculpting time. :D

Thanks for the comments everyone, and for the warm welcome!! I've been a little shy about posting on the forum but it seems that was all for naught! To reply to the questions,

Brad, I went with a pretty simple pose but I am thinking of incorporating another figure and making a small vignette with the other player in the crease trying to screen the goalies view...hopefully as things develop he'll get more dynamic because I do see your point.

Jay, as a Canadian living in California I completely understand your bias when it comes to being a hocky fan, thanks for the comment!

Gary, thanks for the warm welcome, I definitely have an interest in military and historical sculpts and I'm amazed at the work produced here...I figured for me it was best to start with something I know, and after playing for 25 years and being a fan for 40 years, hockey just seemed right.

Wendy, I think he's an amalgam of the ideas in my head and what I see in reference, but being a bit old school myslf, the pads are definitely more soft and rounded as opposed to the butterfly pads which I'm not a fan of because they are so structured that they look like blocks of plastic.

Thanks again for the warm welcome ....

I customize McFarlane figures, including NHL. Not the same as the level you are going but you might have an interest. Here are a few I have completed, the first three were all done for charity auctions which I donated them for:

Those are very cool Rob! The MacFarlane figures are really popular with a lot of my friends and having the custom versions is a great idea. Do you mind if I ask how you do the lettering on the uniforms? Do you print your own decals or do you have a magic technique because they look great! I have a nephew who plays minor hockey and I'd like to do something with his team logo if there's a way to do it. Really nice work there!

I print my own decals. PM your way, we can continue more discussion that route, that way it won't clog up your thread.
