Hi All
Thanks for all who posted comments on the painting forum, they have been very helpful and a big boost to my painting knowledgebase.

I'll post pics of my WiP and am happy for any suggestions along the way.

I've always enjoyed painting reds and metals so this bust was an instant magnet for me.

The checks are now as good as I can get them - but will get shades and highlights to bring them out later. I tried for 4 bands, but it was just too hard and settled for 3.

The starting pics are just in the base colours of Vallejo 926 Red and 883 silver grey and Vallejo Bronze.

Cheers
Pete

Very nice start Peter and the helmet design looks fine; so don't mess with the checker pattern any more trying to 'tweak' it. I would suggest though taking a look at what appears to be a prominent pin/air hole in the resin cape (at the 9 o'clock position on the pic). Be a shame mate to do a lot of work only to have a airhole still visible at the end as it really draws the eye to it.

It's only a 30 secs job with some Milliput or Mr Surfacer etc. to rectify.

Look forward to seeing this bust progress!

Pre wash detail added.

Yes Redcap, the cape had a few air holes - this is one I missed. Oddly the cape seems to be of measurably lower quality than the rest of the sculpt - which was almost perfect.

Spot of supa glu should sort it.

thanks for the heads up

Various emamel washes applied to give more interest and depth to the reds and bronze. I will finish pulling the wash back with thinner then give it a day to dry before going onto shading and highlighting.

All ready for assembly then final paint effects.

These pictures show shadows and highlights applied and face done. (face won't be seen, so only a little work needed in the areas that show thru the helmet.

White stitching was very tricky, but looks good against the red.

Touch of gold to bring out highlights on the bronze.
