For the helmet,a base coat of light field grey (XF65 and XF2)left it for 24hrs to dry.I then used unperfumed Extra hold hairspray(Tesco)which was sprayed all over the helmet,I left this to dry for half an hour.I then misted XF2 all over.I waited half an hour and then using warm tap water I brushed this all over the helmet.After about 2 minutes I used a stiff brush to remove the white using a downward motion,this pulled the white off very easily, after a couple of strokes give the brush a quick clean in water.Once I was satisfied with what I removed (this took about a minute) I used a cocktail stick to add further random scratches.And that is the hairspray method.Further weathering was then added 24 hours later,this consisted of a very thin wash of burnt umber oil and white spirit then an acrylic mix of silver brown and black was randomly sponged on.
I have not tried the salt method
