Hi Folks,

When it first came out, I liked everything about the Young Miniatures U.S. Ranger bust apart from the fact that it had no helmet option.
Earlier this year I saw an excellent one on PF that had been completed as I preferred (by 'SLR').
Eventually, I decided to have a go myself.
This is my effort, and is my last figure for 2016.
The roughening of the helmet surface was achieved using Tamiya diorama texture paint (grit effect - light sand).
The face is painted in oils over enamels. The helmet is mainly enamels with oil for the leather liner strap and acrylic for the main strap. The clothing and straps etc. were painted using Lifecolor acrylics. Strap ends, buckles etc. were painted in enamels and then scribbled over with a lead pencil. A light buffing with a stiffish brush achieved a suitable glint of bare metal.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this one, and hope you like the result.
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to All.

Cheers,
Andrew

Very, very well done Andrew (y)!

How did you find working with the Lifecolors? I haven't tried them on figures yet. Excellent effects on the metal bits!

Many thanks for the kind comment Joe.
Lifecolors are fine for WW2 figures. I have both the U.S. uniform sets.
I just give the jar a good shake and use the paint straight from the lid.
For shading I use a thinned Sepia oil paint. It's very neutral and merely darkens the base.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew
I would like to convey my compliments on a great looking bust, I do believe it's a much better finished piece with the helmet on than the bare head.
Can I ask did you sculpt the helmet or use one from another figure ?

thanks Alan

Many thanks for the kind words Alan.
I wish I could sculpt well enough to produce such a helmet.
I bought this bust together with the YM Easy Co. in Bastogne (the one with a bazooka). The helmet was a perfect match and I made a copy.
Then the fun started. The 'jug' ears on the Ranger didn't fit into the helmet, so I had to cut slivers out of the backs and pinned them back with CA glue.
Minor cracking was repaired with Magic Sculp.

Cheers,
Andrew

P.S. The helmet copy is a 'one-off' for my personal project. The mould was ditched on completion.
