It's a beautiful paintjob on a remarkable bust by Legion.As for the great Toshiro (my second favorite after Tatsuya Nakadai),he was of japanese stock alright but born and raised in China and his given name was much more "Chinese".He adopted the "very Japanese"name Toshiro Mifune as he wanted to make a caree for himself in his ancestral land.
