Completed Spartan hoplite 7th century B.C.

Hello everyone, I have just finished this Spartan hoplite. He is sculpted in Chavant & his height is 22 cm. The only thing remaining is the upper part of the spear & then he'll be molded in silicone. I sculpted this for a cousin of mine who asked me for a Spartan soldier. I wanted to avoid...

A good figure painting book to buy

Hello Chris, another classic is Shep Paine's Building & Painting Scale Figures. It's a bit old but useful, I think. All the best, Elia :)

Aussie uniform in the Western Front

Hello Fabricio, I'm by no means an expert but this looks fine although I'm not sure about whether the webbing was leather or not. Also, there seems to be a bit missing from the webbing, the pouch attached to the haversack. Here are a link to photos from the era which might help...

    WW1 uniforms.

Hello Simon, Osprey's publications are pretty good (Tommy, British Army, German Army etc.) at http://www.ospreypublishing.com/world_war_1/. I usually use the Osprey books for the general reference and then rely mostly on photos for specifics. Of course I use them for more for sculpting than...

Thank you for your kind words, Keith!

    WIP Roman Legionnaire

Chavant hardens a bit when exposed to air but as it's plasticine it's still malleable & does not dry rock hard as Magic Sculpt does. I don't want to have to re-sculpt all the detail so I wrapped it to protect it from the pressure of my fingers while holding it and sculpting the rest. Once it's...

Thank you, Rodion! (Why unusual?) All the best, Elia :)

    WIP Roman Legionnaire

@Ralph: thank you. @Mike: thanks for the info. I don't think I'll sculpt the cloak as I've already sculpted the back of the armour. Also, since I'm going to mould it any extra item (sword, dagger, pilum etc.) should be cast as a separate piece just to be on the safe side. All the best, Elia :)

    WIP Roman Legionnaire

Hello all, sculpting is progressing slowly. I'm now doing the lorica segmentata. Next I'll add half of the arms and complete the armour. I'm not sure if I should add a cloak or not. Was it just for the officers or for all soldiers? Comments welcome. All the best, Elia :)

Thanks for the feedback, Mike. I don't know about the helmet yet - it will probably be the last thing I do - but I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind :)! All the best, Elia :)

Hello, These are the latest pictures of the project. Feet, caligae & face (more or less) done, moving on to tunic and armour. All the best, Elia :)

    WIP Roman Legionnaire

I'll go for lorica segmantata. I'm not sure about the tunic colour though: in my reference it says white but I've also seen red. What do you think? I've just finished the feet and sandals - they took a lot more work than I thought. The tunic is next. I'll post more pictures soon. All the...

    WW 1 Tommy uniform color.

I use oils and mix one part white, one part burnt umber, one part yellow ochre and a tiny bit of black. I hope that this helps. All the best, Elia :)

This figure is 12,5 cm but I don't have a particular size that I sculpt. It can be this small up to almost life size. All the best, Elia

    WIP Roman Legionnaire

Hello everybody! this is my latest project, a Roman Legionnaire of circa 50 AD. I have completed the body - apart for a few adjustments in the face - and now it's time to add the clothing. I'll add the upper arms when I sculpt the tunic & armour. The lower arms & hands will be separate pieces...

WIP Critique Gordon Highlander Private 1914

Hello all, after a (very) long while I finally finished the figure. The pictures are pretty poor but you get a general idea of it. Usually I use oils over enamels but this time I had a lot of trouble with the paints: for some reason, although I primed with an enamel spray, the oils just did...

Hello everyone, yesterday I started sculpting the clothing. There's still a long way to go as there are lots of things to add: belt, shoes, coat etc. not to mention arms! As always, feedback is appreciated. Have a good week! All the best, Elia :)
