WIP Sergeant, 40th Regiment of foot light infantry, Germantown 1777

Gary, you know I'll be all over this one. Love the scale and subject. One thing though...you mentioned the legs looking odd at different camera angles. I don't think that it's the legs. It looks like the shoulders are parallel to the hips. Maybe a little contrapposto would help.

[Aug 3, 2012] Artist Prrservation Show Aug 3-5 2012 (Fredericksburg, VA)

The APG show was a big success! The auction raised $12k for historical preservation! The battlefield tours of Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville were worth the trip alone. Although I didn't make it for Doug Cohen's painting class, I heard that was great and even went into overtime. Anyone...

    Realistic paintjob or artistic license?

Mike, That was my point exactly! These types of debates always crop up in our miniature world and I think it's because we are somewhere between being artists and IPMS paint chip matchers. As for me, give me creativity! Also, someone brought up the historical artists, Rocco and Trioani...

    Realistic paintjob or artistic license?

I voted for Artistic License. Not because I don't value historical accuracy but because 100% accurate is impossible. On an art forum I participate in, there was a debate about Abstract vs. Realism. The argument was made that since paint can only reproduce a fraction of the real color found in...

    Giuseppe Garibaldi

Great work Roberto! It also appears to be well sculpted. I may have get one myself. I'm usually into US History, but I've always been interested in Garibaldi. There's a chance some of my relatives served under him as well, though I don't think I'll ever know for sure. Happy New year, Pete

    for American revolution buffs

Too true Gary. And I'm ashamed to say that my native state leads the parade. The "Crossroads of the Revolution" project has brought awareness to the rapidly disappearing historic sites, but money talks in our small, land starved and corrupt state. Still, you have to try.

    Tube acrylics

Alex, I recently tried an experiment which, I thought, turned out well. I primed my figure in flat black primer and went right in with my oils. I used the fat over lean rule just as you would on a painting. This is, I scumbled in a thinned dark value and then built up the highlights in...

    Confederate Flat No2

Roger, Since this piece is taken from a Don Trioani painting (let's not even go there!), I'd take a good close look at that to see where improvements can be made. It's common practice for artists to copy a famous work as a learning experience, so I'd go that route. Also, since it's a...

Support the underdogs of the figure market.

I don't buy into the idea that buying from the "little guys" will bring down prices of the "big guys". It's a little too much to get in to, but what happens to the "little guys" prices when demand goes up? In fact, I don't even think there's an issue in the first place. Look at it this way...

That's a great photo. I just did a painting based on it....

    5th New York Zouaves

Cool picture Gary! Where did you find that? I've never seen that one before. They sure don't look like 5th NY as you'd normally picture them.

Thanks guys. I hope it works out as I'd like to make it a yearly thing. I also hope that more figure guys will participate in the future because I think it would be great for the hobby.

    History Meets the Arts

Hey Folks, I thought some of you might find this interesting. April 13-15 Gettysburg PA hosts "History Meets the Arts" which is a gathering of historical artists (and yes, some figure guys) at various galleries and shops throughout town. This year, I am very humbled to have been invited...

    A Challenge to Figure Modellers

It sounds like some kind of pyramid scheme. :) I think it was mentioned already but it's rare that a teenager gets involved in what we do. It's the 30+ age group that supports the hobby in my opinion. Let's face it, it's a hobby of solitude and that's not something that appeals to teens. It...

Don Troiani's Solders of the American Revolution

You guys are right. There's not too much out there on the Rev War and normally I'd jump at this one. With all the repackaging going on, I'm going to have to see this one first before I buy it. It seems like he's coming out with something "new" every few months. I finally recieved Rocco's...

How do you rate the judging at the shows?

What I find amusing is that so many folks will say the judging or the competition is not important. What is important is meeting people, making friends, blah, blah, blah; yet the quality of judging is still an amazingly popular topic of discussion. Hmmm...... :)
