Browning '30 Cal. Gunner (in progress)

The condensate of the cooling water runs into the can through the hose. Then the water's poured back into the cooling jacket. The gallon of water could evaporate in as little as two minutes of firing. Since there's some inevitable loss, there had to be an extra water supply near the MG pit. Or...

    Ideas for My First Sculpture

My usual source for armature wire is dumpsters outside building sites. Copper electrical wire is usually to be found in every diameter you'd like. Just strip off the insulation. The trick is not to end up with metres more than you'll ever use....

Ruby Ford Figures from G.R.R upcoming release

I like Meier's work a lot and was waiting for this set- but Testor's $120 price tag is out of line. Sure, it's limited to 750 pieces (how many in a usual commercial issue?) and has fancy packaging ... and a certificate, wow! Makes the European manufacturers look positively bargain basement.

    "Air pipe" Helmet

London England's Metropolitan Police- the Peelers- adopted a similar style of helmet in 1860 to replace their top hats. It's called a "comb" helmet. Versions are also worn by firefighters.

That's one looooong torso.... and Series 77 legs.

    Teddy bear Picnic

The figurinistas I know are mostly into the 28-32mm scale part of the hobby. They all swear by controlled washes for shading and careful dry-brushing for highlights. That's the combo I tried on the Eureka "7 Years Picnic" bear soldiers' fur and it worked really well. Uniforms and equipment got...

    Teddy bear Picnic

This set's from Thunderbolt Mountain. I bought one myself- who could resist? Bear fans should also check out the Eureka Miniatures line of teddy bears. They do Seven Years War and Zulu sets in 28mm. The Seven Years War bears carry pop guns; the cavalry's mounted on hobby horses. (And they look...

searching contact with Magic Sculpt owner

I tried 'em a couple of years ago- no response. I'd got a sample from a friend who sculpts for garage kit companies, and liked it a lot. Doesn't seem to be available in the Canadian market. I'm now using Aves Apoxie. It's pretty close to Magic Sculp; not better, not worse, just a little...

El Viejo Dragón Miniaturas- October releases

But... water not included!?! :o Well, heck, why else would I buy the kit? That's a big but... ;) (Actually, less than 18 Euros for four 40mm figures and a large base seems like a pretty good deal.)

Wounded Knight on Battle, Agincourt 1415

The physical language of the wounded arm is perfect- and the right amount of determined defiance in those brows.

    French Herald at Agincourt

Thought he looked more Italian than French  Almost disturbingly spot-on self-portrait. That look of confident nonchalance.... And I bet it's how the French really felt before the the battle.

    Modified David Parkins WW1 Machinegunner

That slimy, oozing muck gives me the chills. It would've been easy to ovedo in that scale. Your contrast of dull dustiness to the liquid-laden mud barely held back by the boards has created an authentically claustrophobic setting for the figure.

    military modelling figure issues?

My back issue stacks yielded these Figure Specials: v29#5, v30#5, v31#9, v32#9. Euro Militaire Specials: 1996 (no #), v28#3, v28#17, v29#13, v30#14, v31#14, v32#14. They never gave enough info in these show reports- not even scale!- compared to the French mag Figurines... Lots of eye-candy, anyhow.

    SCULPTING 101 STEP BY STEP

I love the way that even at this stage the figure has character- the angles of the legs, the twist of the torso- it's alive! For me, this is the pure fun part of sculpting. Refining the figure is fun, too, but on another level... So many fine art sculptors don't take it beyond the 'sketch'...

    Finished Duke of Marlborough

Not sure if it's just the white causing an optical 'bloom', but shouldn't the horse's chest be more defined? Not as much as, say, Lara Croft... or Arnold; just *some* visible muscle.

    Figure in progress #2

Hi Denis. How about trying a *very* sharply pointed pencil? Or the edge of a propelling pencil lead... they come as small as .5mm. The armour modelling clan often represent metal exposed by chipped/worn paint this way. Of course, in non-digitally-enlarged real life it probably won't even be...

    Figure in progress #2

Hi Denis. The ivory pistol-grips look perfectly colour-toned (I've got a thing for old ivory ;)), but shouldn't there be a central strip of the metal frame showing? Hate to lose the extra ivory, though :(... And the only Colts I've ever seen up close fire caps!

    Repainting McFarlaine?

I found a bunch of his 75mm baseball personality 2-packs for $1.99 CDN at the local Wal-Mart. Their uniforms are tight enough to clothe in a thin layer of Apoxie and not look too bulky. A new #11 blade goes through the plastic cleanly, giving me a pile of 1/24 mannequin components. And Glenn...

Mmmmm...Leela! Just hope Groening isn't as litigious as a certain US Civil War enthusiast.

Extra Magic Sculpt = Goofy Viking

Yes, I've seen a few Serious figures that don't have the raised arm properly sculpted ;)
