How I build dioramas Part 2

Hi John, I can only speak for myself but I assure you that I am following this thread with interest even if I rarely give a comment. As you said yourself the number of hits you get proves that there is a huge interest in your work. I am figure modeller and painter which does not mean that...

    Maybe by intention.

    Re-enactor

Lol. Maybe you should give him a wrist watch and let a cellphone poke out somewhere.

    Swedish Lifeguard Dragoon, 1700

Anders, thanks for the hints, I knew the Acedia books, but not the Åberg. I can also recommend this one, which shows many original pieces of equipment and uniform, as well as contemporary illustrations: Bellander, Erik: Dräkt och uniform. Den svenska arméns beklädnad från 1500-talets början...

    Swedish Lifeguard Dragoon, 1700

Love him, Anders. One of my favorite periods, unfortunately not well represented. Looking forward to seeing him painted. How is he holding the standard? Maybe I should do one or the other of the Russians one day. ;-) What sources do you use for that period? I know about the Höglund...

    Jan Sobesky Cavalry

One of my favorite periods and scales. Good to see some Polish 17th century cavalry besides the famous winged hussars. I especially like the pancerny (the horseman with the targe). Molodec! When and where will these be available?

The Scheibe von Nebra (cosmic disc found near the town of Nebra in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). Nice idea, Ulrich, good sculpt.

    Yury Serebriakov - Landsknecht Bust

Stuffing a pipe in the early years of the 16th century? Hmm, did I miss any news about the import of tobacco from the New World? Very nice sculpt as is.

    Best and worst historical movies.

Not quite. The action supposedly starts in 1800, and both the protagonists are wearing tchakos with imperials eagles on them. They should be rather wearing mirlitons at that point of time. Just my two pennies worth.

    Kościuszko-54m

Very nice sculpting and one of my favorite periods of history. One small historical annotation. As so often Kościuszko is depicted wearing the sukmana, the Polish peasants' coat. Thus he was painted by Kossak in the famous Racławice Panorama. To the best of my knowledge tradition has it that...

What is your preferred figure era?

Jamie, FIW = French Indian Wars (American theatre of war, as opposed to Europe's War of the Austrian Succession and Silesian Wars including Seven Years War). I am definitely also interested in the interwar periods, military and civilian costume in general, and non-military subjects.

    Gladiatrici

Gladiatrix - plural gladiatrices? Just a thought.

What is your preferred figure era?

None of those. Whenever there is talk about 'preferred areas', there is a huge void between the middle ages and Napoleonics. What about Renaissance, 17th and 18th centuries? And mind you, then it's not all ECW and FIW. So my preferred areas are Thirty Years War, early standing armies (ca...

Looking for info on Napoleonic Era French Backpack

Hello Brent, don't paint the edges white, which is a mistake often seen on figurines and in paintings. Otherwise, you can use any cowhide or goathide as a reference.

    Grenadier of the Guard

Ross, I like your matt surfaces. Maybe the blue is a tad too bright but that may be the photograph. I would retouch his facial hair a bit so it may feather out and cover the sculpted surface better.

Some ramblings on size versus scale.

As for the mm system, you generally don't end up diplaying a 200mm figure next to a vehicle. So why worry about the size? Because you might want to use different figurines in a diorama.

Some ramblings on size versus scale.

Steve, I have to disagree. I seem to remember one manufacturer (Thistle Miniatures?, don't know if they are still in business) that announced their figures being in 'true' 1/32nd scale, implying that the actual height of figures may vary. I found that a convincing production policy. If people...
