    help with copper cuirass

About the colour, there's a little confusion above - some carabinier cuirasses were skinned in copper, some in brass. If you're doing the brass one then it should be a full-on yellow brass colour, the copper ones were the typical colour of polished copper (pinkish). Some diving helmets show...

    Acrylics Jo Sonja

I'd agree, but only with the stipulation that the entire model is painted the same way. These days we often see uniformly matt skin mixed with leather that has a sheen, metallic paints instead of NMM etc. which doesn't 'make sense' visually. Dick Blick is one of the usual recommendations for...

WIP Critique Maori Warrior, Pegaso bust, 1/9th scale

I do too. That look is from using it to excess (huge excess IMO), particularly if it's applied on top of fleshtones in glazes. This is why I keep emphasising not using it to excess, using controlled amounts, using it in mixtures. That's exactly why you use it, for the greying effect - shadows...

    Lead foil, good vs bad

Where appropriate I'd still use lead foil for straps, for certain applications though I'd prefer to use other things, including electrical tape or thinly-rolled Kneadatite. Not so much. Good primer helps ensure it doesn't happen. If you're concerned about it you could always try switching to...

    Oil paint wash

Soaking out some excess oil before you make up the wash will certainly help, but some pigments tend to promote a gloss finish far more than others (compare one of the phthalo blues with French Ultramarine for example). Thinning heavily will also tend to make for a wash that dries matt, because...

WIP Critique Maori Warrior, Pegaso bust, 1/9th scale

In the mix Tony, wasn't suggesting using black by itself. You blend black with ochre or yellow and you get green, so you can see how it might be used right there. And like I mention above black can work really well in fleshtones; if you want to up your game in terms of colour mixing then I'd...

WIP Critique Maori Warrior, Pegaso bust, 1/9th scale

:X3: There should be no problem including black in mixes Phil, the problems arise when it's used to excess. Quite apart from the fact that you can mix perfectly good fleshtones using some black, perhaps you don't realise that many commercial Van Dyke Brown paints are made using black ;) Einion

Not really my bag but that looks like a lovely bit of sculpting. Heavy as hell in white metal though! Einion

Was going to say the same thing myself. Judging from period photos just as with Native Americans some Maori got very dark with exposure to the sun. Einion

Try this with your 3D printer......

Well given the original premise of the thread it was in line for a derailment from the get go :D And it's not like related/tangential stuff would not naturally get brought up in any thread on trad v digital sculpting, even if it wasn't intended for discussion initially. Einion

advice on painting chainmail and using printers inks

That might be an issue with the specific inks, there are loads of different brands and some are much more brilliant than others. That was one of the reasons I was reticent to pick them up initially, and subsequently I developed other ways of doing different metallics so no need for them now...

    Acrylics Black Undercoat

There are a few reasons but one of the most basic is white's best suited to light colours and bright colours, black for dark colours and dull colours while grey is the best middle of the road. Primer colour is nearly irrelevant from one perspective once you have an airbrush to undercoat with...

    Acrylics Black Undercoat

They're both using a black primer aren't they? Once you cover this with your actual undercoat it doesn't make a lot of difference what the primer colour is. But practically, black can be very hard to completely cover; the better the opacity of your paints the less of a problem you'll have with...

    Acrylics Jo Sonja

I'm not sure what would have given you that impression but no, they're absolutely not like oils (any more than any acrylic paint is). They're very matt. That's one of their primary selling points. It's for this reason that I wouldn't normally use them for skin - unless the same model featured...

advice on painting chainmail and using printers inks

That is a good method! Lots of people paint it in that way. BTW it's more correctly called mail, not chainmail. In the new ranks of 'metallic' paints some use a bismuth pigment (e.g. some of the VMAs), which is actually finer than printer's ink. Humbrol's venerable Metalcote paints based on...

    Cam Cream on Faces

With camo I think you should factor in from the beginning that so much of the skin is going to be covered at the end of the day, so you don't paint it as thoroughly as you would otherwise - very hard to stomach covering hours of effort! There's always a risk that you will spoil things applying...
