    Oh, yes. It was another much smaller metal pin, a red star, on the helmet. The first type of this pin (1918-1921) From April 13, 1922, it became a bit different. And the final design was introduced on July 11, 1922.

    Red army wore the same greatcoat that the Imperial army before it. 3 flaps and two tabs indicated the army branch and were of the same color as the star on the helmet.

    The color of a big star made out of a piece of fabric referred to a specific army branch. Blue for cavalry, black for artillery, green for border guards, etc.

    Here is some more references. Broadcloth helmet: Budenovka (named after Red Army cavalry commander Semyon Budyonny) Most of the time, it was made out of wool. But sometime leather was used as well.
