Morning all just about got this little grouping of pilots ready for paint to go alongside the four Triplanes I finished recently.
All started as 3d printed civilians; a few had slightly altered poses to suit the context and after the existing clothing was scraped back new stuff was added in stages using duro/miliput mix and slit down masking tape. The 3d printed resin is very brittle so a few expletives might have been used as limbs were broken and reset with tiny brass pins.
When painted they'll stand in front of the group of 4 Jasta 19 Fokker Dr1's with Hans Pippart (New CO at this time) in his fisherman's jumper explaining a tactic to his pilots before heading skywards. Pipparts discarded jacket will be added to the fueslage of his all black aircraft to break up the shape a bit and hopefully his white jumper will draw the eye to him among the greys and browns of the rest.

Tremendous project, not only the airframes but significantly converted, and done very well indeed, 1/72nd scale figures to boot. Very impressive work and I'm looking forward to seeing this develop.

Aircraft all finished and displayed at the earlier Bovington show this year, but they definitely missed having some figures to bring the whole thing to life. I had intended to add a couple of ground crew, but think the 'story' is better told just using the pilots (That's my excuse for not doing many more figures and I'm sticking to it) ;)

Cheers

Hiya matey :D

No eyelashes on this little lot sadly, but I'll see if I can pop a catchlight in there just for you. ;)

Cheers

ps - a couple of pics of one of the Dr1's for those interested. A few extra details (!) added as well as refinement to the kit parts used. Props are all carved from laminated plywood and engines include spark plugs (although I did draw the line at adding the spark plug wires)

Hi Paul

WOW!!!...they look great ...love the colour schemes and the props ( hand carved I think )

Thanks for posting the pics

Happy benchtime

Cheers Kev - Hopefully catch up at a show soon :)

Hells teeth I like that,it's so small, you sir have the fingers of a maestro, and I'd love to see catchlights in the eyes!

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. They are quite small, but that's one of the nice things about them. The whole diorama fits onto a base no bigger than a sheet of A4 paper.

Cheers

The Tripes are mostly Eduard although one is a SMER reboxing (same molding but cheaper)
Sadly I can't remember who made the original figures (I bought a few a couple of years ago because I thought they might be useful) I'll be after some of the Preiser 'Military' range for future work (Their HO/OO range are not 1/72 unfortunately)
Decals came from a few sources and the streaking is painted rather than decals because I wanted to use a different colour and get a rougher style than the decals.

Hope that helps
Paul

They look really good, love how you did the buttons.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. They are a bit of a compromise in some ways because you need a high contrast so that they can be viewed 'normally' (without a lens), but then they look crude when blown up. Metallics stand out far too much so toning them down by mixing with a close colour helps or adding a glaze afterwards.

Hi Mr Paul

Looking great Paul , how you paint these is beyond me !

Everything’s welcome on PF with a hint of a pilot or ground crew ,saying that it’s great to see the WW1 planes as well

You keep orbiting

Look forward to seeing more

Checks Away and Tally Ho !

Thanks Matey.(y)

Incidentally for those who are tiny brush users these are all painted with a decent size 2 sable (I'll be having none of that treble 'o' nonsense in this workroom) :D

Slight hiccup when I was positioning the figures. I managed to drop one onto the floor and the head snapped off and vanished. Despite enlisting the help of my eagle eyed daughter and a vacuum with a stocking over it there remained no sign of the decapitated head :(
Still Dr Fank' had nothing on me so a new bonce was grafted into place and a couple of evenings with putty and paint had him ready for his photo call :D
