Nice article, But I am not convinced that they are the top 11. The Martini Henry and The Lee Enfield should be there.

Whilst on the Subject Can any one tell why we call a Musket a Musket??

Mick

Musket in English, Mousquet in French, Muskete in German, all come from the Italian word for crossbow bolt "moscetta", which is the diminutive of "mosca" fly (the insect, not the part of the trousers). On the continent the name applies only to muzzle-loading smooth-bore handguns.
I'm not convinced about the choice of the 'most important guns in history' either, but lists are just lists aren't they?

Anyone else know where the title or epithet ,Bondook' comes from.?
I imagine it's an indo-arab word corrupted by the british like so many others.
Paul

Sit tight Paul, this explanation is somewhat weird. According to the omniscient Hobson-Jobson , that fountain of knowledge on Anglo-Indian speak, bondook or more correctly "bundook" in Hindi derives from the Arabian "bunduk" which originally was the name for hazelnuts from there it transferred to nut-like projectiles for yes indeed crossbows, from where it transferred to firearms. Bunduk comes from Banadik, Arabian for Venice from where the hazelnuts came. This is getting me nuts!!!!!!

This just goes to prove you learn something new every day I was always told that a Musket was called a Musket was because if one was fired at you. You 'Must-get 'out the way. Just goes to show how wrong you can be.
On a serious note I didn't know so thanks for the info.

As an aside Rifles were still being called bundooks in the 80s when I was in

Having had experiences with some weapons listed the choice of Uzi as "most important" made me smile.

To you guys the SLR in thousands of imperial inches, to us on this side of the Channel the FAL in mm, with folding stock and on full automatic the trustworthy companion of several generations of Belgian paracommandos! Personally for me the best rifle in the world(y) Oops, that was a dangerous slip of the keyboard!
