I was recently able to acquire a 1910 Ford Model T in 1/16th scale - a Lindberg plastic kit. I was wondering if such a vehicle would have been used either in 1916 - Pancho Villa expedition into Mexico and/or taken to Europe by the AEF? It could possibly be converted to a truck or something like that.

Photo or documentary info anybody?

All the best,
Dan

Dan,
All I can find images of WRT motor vechicles used by the US Army in Mexico (1916) are trucks and motorcycles, BUT the Model T was a a pretty widely produced car and also pretty iconic. Looking at the boxart for this kit and a phot of the model 1917 Model T I don't see much difference visually (that said I ride public transportation so I am no expert on cars ;) )

Gordy and Matthew - Thanks - I found some Dodges ca. 1916 and lots of trucks - some of which could be Model T variants all in Army paint scheme, but strangely no Model T Fords. Close enough for me historically. Not sure what I'll do with it. Maybe a Harley and a Model T in the same vignette.

All the best,
Dan

Thanks Bob! With respect to the Villa expedition, Would you say that a Ford T would be non-historic, an inaccurate depiction, etc.? I'm thinking they probably used them - probably more Model T trucks than convertibles or touring cars.

All the best,

Dan

I believe that Model T's were used along the border but did not participate in the actual expedition into the interior of Mexico. I know there were Model T ambulances used from 1915 onward. Now, the Mexicans probably used more Model T's than the US Army. That may be something to look into.

The best picture I could find was of a restoration of a 1918 Model T used in WW1 (not in the Punitive Expedition though). Ford only supplied the chassis and various companies made the cabs and beds. Needless to say, there were lots of variations.

Forty of the trucks that were used was this Model "B:"

Also the Jeffrey Quad armored car was used as well as motorcycles:

But, as I said the car that Pershing himself used and George Patton was this one:

Dan,

Here is a kit in 1/48th scale of a WWI era Model T ambulance:

I remember many years ago (1970s!) an article in the American Mag, Military Moldeler, that showed a similar model. I think this model would be quite an easy conversion from your kit using sheet plastic and evergreen strip. Probably the easiest way to go about this would be to purchase one of the 1/48th scale RPM kits and use it as reference to calculate the correct dimensions for your scale (multiply all dimensions by 3 for 1/16th scale).

Cheers!!

Mike

I came across this bizarre gem. Never saw the movie and it looks just awful but could be pretty funny:

I remember watching that movie on tv several times when I was a kid, don't remember much other than it was not intended to be a documentary, but with what is shown on the (not ) history Channel, this might just pass ;)
