According to the one guy on the 1914-1918 forum, the football match is a 'myth'. His words were: "Tosh! Utter tosh!" What little I've read of the truce doesn't mention it.
Certainly there was fraternization for several days in some places until New Years, singing carols on Christmas eve, at one location widespread burying of the dead with a British chaplain officiating for both sides. But many British and German officers refused to let their troops fraternize at all. And basically any that did allow it caught he** from their respective commanders when it was discovered. Christmas 1915 the brass were very ready to prevent it from happening again.
Apparently may have been some Indian and some French troops involved in the 1914 truce. I can believe the French country folk might be involved, probably not the 'townies' or the gentry and probably not those whose homes were in Northern France and Lorraine. Possibly the Austrians and Russians/Bulgarians may have done something similar.
I would suggest any kind of a truce at any time of the year would have been unlikely for some of the combatants - the Belgiques:Germans or Austrians:Serbs.
All the best,
Dan
