Hi,

I would like to ask for your help regarding the Royal Steward pattern.
On the Osprey book by Mike Chappell my understanding is that the pattern shown is red background , thin vertical stripes (dark blue, light blue, yellow and white) and thin horizontal stripes (yellow and dark blue). Is this correct?

But if I search the internet for the same tartan the images shown have a different pattern.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Paulo

Hi Paulo.
Yes Pipers wore the Royal Steward tartan, But during the WW1 you would not have seen much of it as a Khaki apron would have been worn over it.

Hi Paulo.
Sorry for the delay in getting back.
I take it that the image you posted is art work taken from an Osprey book. I have to say IMO that although they are a good point of reference they are not 100%. The imiage I posted is a photograph of Royal Steward tartan So if I were you I would go with the latter. As for the Pipe bag cover that also is Royal Steward, but it would be filthy. You would not go far wrong if you decided to paint it dark blue.
Mick
