Hi
Thankyou so much for the kind comments about all the figures I have posted.
I will indeed keep you posted to my latest works and I do have a few more pics I can post later.
Ill post this on each figure page for those who have asked questions and are interested.
I paint all my figures in oils as I just cants seem to get on with acrylics.
That said I always prime the figure in Humbrol matt white via my airbrush and then undercoat the colours in acrylics. This then enables me to paint the oils directly on top with no fear of the acrylic lifting.
I use ordinary household white spirit as a thinner and very rarely paint wet on wet. I prefer to lay the shadow and highlights in the areas and feather the two. Of course I can add more of each if necessary but the main thing is to get the main shadows and highlights laid in first. And to avoid excess paint build up. I use the tiniest amounts on paint at a time and this is why I very rarely get shiny areas. I think the Humbrol undercoat helps aswell. I have tried to copy an acrylic style but as I said I cannot paint with them.
For any AFV modellers out there. The ironic thing is I love seeing well weathered and realistic AFVs but I am no good at them either. So it seems each to their own. I still like looking though.
I will try and do a progress report on my next figure and maybe a small tutorial if people think it would be worthwhile.
Happy to answer any questions and thankyou again
Best wishes and happy painting-Remember make it fun
Graham
PS Unfortunately I cannot make Euro this year-I have never entered these but Judging by the standard each year the work there will be TRULY breathtaking. Cant wait for the photo report

I love the blue.............what do you use for the highlite?? And undercoating of a lighter color before applying oil highlite??

Hi there
for the blue on this I used Blue black with a small amount of Ivory mixed in for the deepest shadows-but not too dark.
I highlighted with a chocolate mix of burnt umber and white mixed into the original colour on the palette and then applied. I then gradually highlight and shade more as needed.
My Knight was the same process but using Phathleo Blue(think thats right) and Cerulean and white-all mixed to make the highlight.
A very small amount of ivory was used in with the Phathloe Blue for deep shadow but DO NOT get the black near the highlights. It will go blue grey.
Basic colur for transistion was just Phathleo .
All were applied on a acrylic undercoat.
Hope this helps
Graham

Wow, I love it. I wish that I could get my eyes that good. Practice Practice Practice. I guess that I'm going to have to have more than just 5 pieces done   I'm working on it!

Did you use a clear coat on the eyes after they were painted?

Graham, Very nice job on the bust I like your painting stlye. The only constructive comments I have regard the uniform. The two things that standout are the forage cap visor which looks like a modern baseball player's and the Sergeant's stripes which look too small. These may sound like nit picky thing but ones to possibly consider when doing Civil War subjects. Keep it up.~Gary
