Ok, I said I'd post some pics, and here's the first. It's the same bust that Anders worked on. As usual all comments and critiques are welcome.

Hi Anders, here is the finished version he's a bit of a mix on this one.

watercolour for the face, greatcoat and sash.
acrylic for the fur trim
ink for the buttons, whistle and chain
metalcote for the sword and an el cheapo productions scrylic for the sword ribbon.

all comments etc etc ......

Very well done Richard....I like the highlighting of the Coat and the sash.....brings out more detail.

Hey Richard!!

Very nice! I love the red sash, much better then mine! I like everything else also though, nice handling on the great coat, I found it to be a challenge due to large areas of same color. But now I have to ask a question, I painted the gloves white, you did your in black, and you painted the fur in white, I painted mine in brown. Are both correct or am I worng? I went with the painting instructions that came with the kit.

Hi Anders

Glad you like it, it's nice to compare but now a confession.

I hate painting neutral colours like grey, because you really have to overdo the contrast, so the sash in my opinion is overdone as well but needed to complement the greatcoat. FWIW I preferred your interpretation of the sash.

I took my references from a book called British Military Uniforms by W Y Carman, published by Spring Books in 1957 (so no ISBN). which gives the uniform details for each regiment from 1485 onwards, and I've painted according to this. So black stock and gloves and white trim on the pelisse, also according to this the bugle horn of the light infantry should be on the shako.

So I don't know who's right

Hey Richard!

What color did you paint the collar, or the thing underneath the collar? Looks either black or dark green. I need to repaint this on mine I think. I saw that there was a difference but I couldnt figure out what it was, looks like a scarf wrapped around the neck to me.

Hi Anders

The collar is black with white trim, and the thing underneath it is a cravat or a scarf. depending on how wealthy this guy was it would have been cotton or silk and wrapped around to hold the shirt collar in (that would be a tie then )

My reference says black, but apparently the colour was the choice of the battalion commander.

I agree on the sash. Wonderful color and very nicely rendered. Good job. Are you sealing the watercolors after painting with Dullcote? I have used watercolors before and always sealed them since they are water soluable and subject to running if it is too humid.

Hi Bob

Come on I live in England, we don't get humid, it rains or it's cloudy ;)

Seriously, I do seal it with humbrol varnish, started doing it because watercolour tends to flake pretty easily.

Anders, no problem. If you really want to get questions, I'd leave it and paint the plume red (only the 5th Battalion had this).

Richard
