On June 11, 1157, Albrecht "the Bear" ...

... Graf von Ballenstedt und Orlamünde, Markgraf der Lausitz (1123–31), Markgraf der Nordmark (1134–1157) und Herzog von Sachsen (1138–1142) conqueres Brandenburg Castle and chased away the previous lord there, Jacza von Köpenick ...

... a Slavic prince!

Let us assume in their favor that they really looked like Albrecht (monument in the Spandau Citadel) and Jacza on a painting that was created much later.

Contemporary portraits show Albrecht (on a seal) ...

... and his opponent (on a coin) ...

... far less advantageous!

We don't know why Albrecht was given the nickname "the Bear" by his contemporaries. Some think they wanted to give him a similarly sonorous name to that of its contemporary, the Welf Heinrich "the Lion", others think that he had exceptional physical strength that led to the nickname.

I add: Maybe he just had a blessed appetite or he didn't like to take a shower and stank like a bear ...

Anyway ...:

We also have to make a few cuts under "Burg"! Brandenburg Castle did not look remotely like a castle as we imagine it today, but rather what Slavic castle complexes looked like back then ...:

On the so-called "Jacza Tower" near Köpenick, a relief shows the now homeless Slavic princes fleeing Albrecht and his men...

... and escapes swimming through the Havel ...:

This made Albrecht a margrave and is now called Albrecht I. of Brandenburg.

Historians today regard this date as the founding date of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, from which the Electorate of Brandenburg and later the Kingdom of Prussia will emerge at the end of the 12th century ...:

It is therefore fair to say that Prussia's birthday is today ...!
