Afternoon all

I wanted to keep the brushes flowing so I dug through the grey army and found this fella which I'd already prepped, but was yet to prime (I originally was going to buy the companion RFC pilot to go with it, but decided he would work as a Sgt. about to introduce some new recruits to life in the RFC)

The figure is still available from Tommy's War and is 54 mm, although I must say that it is one of those very delicately sculpted 54's rather than the giant 54's sometimes available: It reminded me very much of Sid Horton's figures in terms of size. :)

Anyway I picked this one up at last years BMSS show in London (along with a few others) It's not really the sort of thing which I go for, but for £3.00 I could hardly say no :D

The sculpting in resin is very sharp which is something I'm not a fan of although some people find it easier to paint. The figure comes with two heads and I'd already glued this version on so I left it as it was and dived right in with the paints, which were my usual acrylics. Not much in the way of details (apart from the badges) so I've tried to create a bit of interest using strong contrasts and slight differences in the shade of Khaki which was an interesting exercise.

Comments welcome.
Paul

ps - just spotted the cap buttons need a lick of paint which I'll do before popping him in the case ;)

Hi Leggy

A quick study ....looks good , nice Kharki colour ...what mix did you use ?

Line the simple groundwork works well

Think he should have a medal ribbon ........

Must get to the Nationals if there's bargains around like this for £3 !!!

Thanks for sharing

Keep those brushes wet

Stay safe

Cheers guys (y)

I'll add a strip of medal ribbons Kev if you give a couple of suggestions. As to the Khaki mix . . . well I started with a dark brown (from the Andrea paint set) and a dark green added a spot of dark blue (also from an Andrea blue set) then lightened it with light flesh and darkened with black. So pretty much mixed it up till I felt it looked about right (Thinking about it there may even be some yellow ochre added into the lighter shades)
I wanted a colour that could be interesting in both the highlights and shadows so unusually for me I just plopped some colours onto the pallet and played about with them till I liked what I got. (Of course there's always the English Uniform colour, but I didn't have any of that)

Groundwork was the ahem! second go and the street surface started as some emery cloth which I distressed a bit. Then I added some patches of 'texture effect' used for tank hulls and lots of paint (including some of the khaki I had left over) Bushes are a mix of standard little tufts with a couple of types of those ground textures which had a khaki tinge.

Not the only bargain I picked up at the Nats (Kontraros St George in it's tin for £20 was the best of them) There was also a chap selling a wide range of 'vintage' figures which I remembered well from the 80's and 90's for next to nothing, but not too many 54 mm unfortunately (Wish I'd picked a few of them up now. In the end I settled for an Andrea knight and another one which I passed on to someone else 'cause they fancied it)

Cheers for now

Nice work Paul.
It’s always difficult to work on a subject which is uniform (pardon the pun) in colour.

Cheers,
Andrew
