I have never seen one Dee. Curious to see if there is one out there. A good cross-reference would be alot of help.

The mini painters have all kinds of charts comparing/converting Vallejo Model Color, Vallejo Game Colors, Andrea Paints, Reaper Paints, P3 paints , Citadel and evry other paint imagineable but I have never seen an acrylic to oil chart. If you are using artists acrylics the names and colors are pretty much the same. Remember almost every bottled acrylic is a mix and not a pure pigment.

Sorry to say you can't really do this Dee, individual paints vary too much. You can mix equivalents to acrylic and vinyl hobby paints in oils, that's definitely doable, but say there's a dedicated modeller that matched his acrylics to his oil paints and posted the results on a website - those mixtures would really only be for those oil paints matched with those acrylics.

Apart from this say there were mixes in oils for GW's Codex Grey, Graveyard Earth, Warlock Purple, VMC Flat Yellow, Intermediate Blue, German Uniform etc. that would work for anyone, this wouldn't actually be as helpful as you might expect.

Everybody above has said it all: its pretty much by eye. If you can grab a couple of "paint chip" charts off an art supply store's (oils) and figure dealer's (acrylics) web sites, you may find its not too hard to match tem up.

Also, JoSonja has a line of acrylics (gouache) with names the same as oil paints. Generally, they run pretty close to the oils colors. I use these for undercoating my oils, and they have a very nice "tooth."

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for your response.

I understand now a bit more about the 2 mediums.
Oils I am going to have to mix.. acrylics.. come mixed.

I did get some Jo Sanyo acrylic and did notice some same names
as in oils. It is nice paint.

I guess I am a little apprehensive because our club is doing the
Atlanta show figure as our project and almost everyone is doing
acrylics. I did start my very first figure in acrylics and this was
only about 16 months ago.. and no one, or not many were doing
acrylics. I then switched to oils.. and I like oils so for now going to
stick with that.

So appreciate everyones reply.

Acrylics/vinyls are available in a lot of pre-mixed colours yes, but they still need to be mixed in use though, in case it's not obvious.

If you need pointers on any colours you're having trouble mixing don't be afraid to ask Dee. We may not be able to give specific answers but members will be able to point you in some useful directions you might not have tried.

There is a vast difference between oils and acrylics in style and results. Personally, I find the acrylic painting technique too trying - going over and over the same area. I find oils/wet on wet much easier and the results more pleasing to my eye. But that's just me.

This is not to advocate one medium over another, but rather to say that both are whorthwhile and that - in the end - you really have to pick your medium based on your own taste and style. Also, it's not a lifetime commitment - many here have switched back and forth, perhaps more than once.

So take a shot and if it does not suit you, you can always move to another medium. Good luck.

Thanks.. good point.. I know a lot of the guys in the club have moved
to acrylics.. or trying it and going back and forth.
I am trying to get a handle on oils.. so not sure right now I can do
what the guys are doing..
Your right.. I have watched Matt Springer who let our Crow Indian
bust project in the club.. demo. acrylics.. and watched the guys do
it and it it quite tedious... but results are pretty neat.

Appreciate your comments..

Thank you
Dee
