Frank.
Love it. You've really caught the weathered, old veteran look. Any chance you could give us a quick recipe on your skin tone, especially the darker, tired look around the eyes?

Cheers
Paul

Hi
Thanks for the kind words

The Skin Tones are achieved following the mixes that Jaume Ortiz
outlined in his SBS on here

My use of them is as follows follows

I use Arena Sand VMC 876 as a base colour

Then put in the shadows using cadmium marroon VMC 859
very dilute

at this stage the face looks really dark

I then wash over some of the shadow colour with a very dilute

Arena Sand .... i follow the sculpting creating the forms

its still looking dark but has a graduation of tone about it

the highlights are sunny skin tone VMC 845 mixed with the arena sand
this looks very stark when applied a bit like war paint
but is then toned back using the base colour and a touch of the shadow
colour in very dilute washes

Deeper shadows are a mix of flat red and flat green ... the resulting colour
with a tiny amount of black can be used for greying the base tone
good for around the eyes once again applied very dilute

I use a wet pallete so quite often colours run into each other

By keeping the paint thin ... all sorts of effects and mistakes can be made
but can be corrected to get the result you want

Hope this insight into my haphazard way of painting is helpful
Its really easier to do than to type out

one other thing I thin my paints with neat screen wash
read it somewhere .... found it really helps the blending
and gives a very slight sheen

Hope this helps

Love the face and thanks for the "recipe"... for us Yanks ... when you say neat screen wash... what, neat means "straight and undiluted?" and screen wash is... ??, windshield cleaner, a cleaner for window screens on a house? Don't mean to be obtuse but I would like to try this technique on a piece today.

thanks,

Kevin D.

Thanks Frank!

Interesting idea... looking forward to trying it and I've got just the bust to experiment with.

Great job on yours thus far.... tremendous painting!

Frank, superb painting so far, will follow progress and I look forward to seeing it at Euro.
As I'm struggling to paint my first figure using Acrylics many thanks for the screenwash tip, will try it tonight.

Cheers Ken
