hi guys,

ok so i am probably going to sound really dumb but i have a question about my new airbrush compressor.

Here goes: I bought a new compressor with a 3Litre tank as my old one was really noisy, now what i want to know is what the tank actually brings to the system?

Does it give you a source of air that you can use when the compressor is completely powerless?

Or

Is it there to provide a regular pressure rather than a drop that can sometimes occur

sorry little confused

Hit the nail on the head.

The tank holds a reservoir of air so you are spraying from a constant source.
The compressor should cut off when the tank is full and kicks back in to top the tank up.
Pulsating should be minimal if any with a reservoir/tank and depending on the compressor should be a lot quieter.
No noise at all when running off the tank and hopefully a fairly quiet running compressor.
Depending on what PSI you are spraying at will determine how quick you get through the tanks air and how often the compressor kicks in to top it up.
I have had 4 compressors and my latest is the iawata, it runs very quiet. My previous tending to get hot and cut off every so often as safety feature, the tank especially helps here although not for long once the air was used. I then had to cool it outside, annoying
Hope that helps

The tank is a reservoir of air so that the motor will not continually run, you should find that the motor will cut out when the reservoir is full and will cut in again when the pressure can no longer be maintained from the reservoir.
you should be able to preset the pressure you want to draw air at and you will have a continual supply, theoretically the motor should cut in before the pressure drops off past the preset. That's how it works spraying cars anyhow!

Ok so if the tank was full and then the compressor was say unplugged from the power supply, could the air in the tank then be used as a stable air source for the airbrush and therefore completely silent ?

yes but the pressure will drop off quite quickly without the motor cycling in and out

thats wht i figured, will experiment just need to keep noise levels down at night as live in terraced house got a poorly neighbor and my two little demons...kids sleeping

To minimize noise from my ancient rattling compessor I place it on soft foam mats on top of of a plastic storage box.

Cheers,
Adrian
