Hi Gary;
Sorry I missed the RMMC show this year, had to attend my daughters graduation so I am pretty sure I made the right call. What is the field like for figures at the AMMS? I could see myself driving down for no other reason than to hang out at the Museum!

Hi Glenn. It's been awhile! Traditionally the figure catagory has almost been non-existant with only 5 or 6 figs in it. (mostly entered by me). I always enter as many as I can not because of the awards given out but I'm trying to get more exposure here in Calgary to figure painting. (as you know it's pretty sparse in this neck of the woods).
Up until last year the show was limited to the years 1900 to modern day armour models and figures so basically everything was WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Afghanistan etc. The new show has been expanded to include all periods in history as long as there is a military association and now also includes ships and aircraft. As far as figures go, Napoleonics, ancient armies, and everything else with a military theme are welcome now.
Young Miniatures has even been kind enough to be one of the sponsors and is throwing in some prizes! You are right about looking around the museum as there is tons of figure/diorama ideas there and photo taking is allowed.

Gary :)
