In a rare burst of patriotism I have decided to do a British figure. That is, a bust of a Blues & Royal trooper at Horseguards (actually it was because I got some really good reference shots at the Guards Museum :) )

However, I have never really found a good way of depicting polished steel (when it wasn't already metal), so if anybody has any tips .... they are all gratefully received.

That's a difficult one Richard!
I'll have a look later to see if I've got any ancient articles about that, but I think they might all be about buffing white metal kits :(
In the mean time, the only thoughts I've got would be either trying one of the Humbrol "metalcote" paints, though I'm not sure they do one bright enough?! or maybe try foiling like the plane guys do for bare metal finishes?
You could try asking over on M.U.G to see if the propeller heads have any ideas for you?
Good to put a face to the name yesterday BTW!
Did you get the bases you wanted?

Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon.

I have been known to do an odd aircraft now and then, and have used bare metal foil, and seems the best bet at the moment. This is a project that will probably end up hitting the wall anyway. :(

(Just had a shock.... had some post delivered ???? )

Good to see you yesterday, even it was for about ten seconds, and yes I did get some very nice bases at a a very good price. Took some photos of the winners in the competition so I'm sure Rob will make them available when I get them to him.

That would be interesting to see!
I have my favourites from what I saw, so it would be interesting to see if any of them got placed!

(hey, you never know, I might have something in there next time! )

Gunze Sangyo makes a buffable brush on metalic line of paints. These are the best for simulating metal on resin or palstic kits. Here is a good (if somewhat long) article on the use of these for medieval armor.

Hi John,

Thanks I always forget about Mr Metallizer becuase you can't get it in the UK. This sort of opens a new thread on whether one of the on line shops in the US do it ?. Squadron don't and neither do Michtoy, and after that I'm a bit stuck ?

Thanks,

I know of Alclad, will be time to dig out the airbrush again I guess. If I remember rightly last time I used it my wife wouldn't speak to me for two days because if the smell of cellulose in the house. I suffer for my art ;)
