Hello figure-mates!

For this Euro Millitaire I am taking a long vacation driving thrue Europé visiting certain sites on the way. But once in the country where they drive on the wrong side of the road I also wish to visit Maldon, Lindisfarne, Stamford Bridge and Fulford. But Im not certain what to expect there or how much time I will need. Im likely to visit York but to my dismay the Viking centre seems to be closed due to flooding. :/
Are there other places of interest in York or in the surroundings? I also would like to visit Hadrians Wall but could use a tip on where to go for a nice experience.

Help me out here fellows.

Cheers

Hi Janne,
If you stay around Bamburgh, one of my favorite areas, you can do day trips to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and down to Hardian wall where you have Wall End at Newcastle,Fort Halstead (Roman Fort) and the tree at SteelRidge from Robin Hood. You could also pop into Scotland, Edinburgh is only an hour away.
York has plenty to see other than the Viking Center. Also as you drive down or up the A1 there are plenty of other historical sites to see.
Hope that helps and you enjoy your trip and hope to meet you at Euro.

Etal castle in Northumberland is a good example of a fortified Reiver-type tower and Flodden field is worth a look,if only to wonder why the Scottish army came down off their hill.

Hi Janne,
If you go to Lindisfarne you can always pop into Hartlepool - I have a piece of rope with your name on it!:p

If travelling up the A1 then stop off at Richmond and visit the Greenhowards museum.

Bamburgh Castle is also a good visit and the Grace Darling museum is in Bamburgh. If you go to Seahouses you can get a boat trip to the Islands.

One of the most atmospheric of the forts on Hadrian's Wall is Chesters Fort, where the Asturias II Ala cavalry regiment was based after their service in Wales at Llanio.
They have a fine and valued collection of Roman artefacts at Chesters, and it is one of the best preserved forts. The English Heritage website has complete details.
Enjoy your odyssey through our septic isle:cool: Oh, did I mean "sceptered" ?.........

Rich.
Thanks, last Euro me and Frank, aka last modeller standing, went to Bath, Stonehenge and Hastings. Thats was great experience and I liked it very much.

Richie.
I dont usually hand out rain checks but in this case I guess I have too. Even though I probably go to Lindisfarne on the eastcoast I was voted most likely to end up in teh gallow in my yearbook and I dont want to press my luck.
Also there wheres some primates on a french forum who claimed theyve had a bad experience visiting Hartlepool?

Alan.
Thanks for the tip, but Im afraid I dodged that pun. Could you elaborate if to me?

Helm.
Thanks.

Sorry, Janne,
When I wrote "septic", (meaning infected or poisonous) it was a pun on a Shakespeare quote " This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle......" and the speech goes on to describe England in flowery terms "This other Eden; demi- paradise" etc.,etc. It's from 'Richard II'

Hi janne It's already been said but the Royal Armories Leeds is a great place to visit and it's free. lots to see and do. if you are in leeds on the second Saturday of the month then come along to the White Rose club you would get a very warm welcome and see some great models too. just a thought.

cheers
