Hi all,
I am about to start on the U-boat Commander bust from Andrea Miniatures
I am painting it for a collector.

The box photo is fine for the overall look of the piece but details such as insignia
etc. are not very clear.

All help and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Frank

What I can see of the photo it appears that he is wearing his walking out tunic on the line. The tunic was made of a fine blue serge. Navy insignia is gilt, or yellow metal. It appears he has a Knights cross with oak leaves, I can not tell if it has swords or not.

Thanks for looking Bryon

My problem is not having any pictorial reference

This is the most historicaly recent figure/bust I have ever attempted

The chap I am painting it for wanted something from WW2
I explained that I did not do Khaki or German field Grey
This terrific kit is the happy compromise

Hi Frank

I've got a 2 or 3 part article on U-boat crew from some very old Military Illustrated magazines. Great illustrations (Kevin Lyles, no less) and in depth.

Give me a call, maybe I can lend them to you.

I just did a quick google image search and got a few (maybe?) useable shots:

A) u-boat uniforms and B) kriegsmarine uniforms

Another possibility would be to check out Das Boot. Considering what the producer went through to make the boat, I'd think the uniforms would be correct as well.

Here's another link I keep handy.
http://www.german-militaria.com/listings.htm

Scroll down to the uniforms listing, and then go to 'Other.' It doesn't have too many Kriegsmarine (Navy) listings, but the ones it does show shold give you a bit of an idea for the color.

You might also check some of the sites that make uniforms for the reenactors.
