Hi everyone

With the forthcoming 10th Anniversary Scale Model Challenge show at the NH Eindhoven Conference Centre "Koningshof" on the weekend of 21/22 October run by the SMC team including of course Robert and Margot Crombeeke

www.scalemodelchallenge.com

https://en-gb.facebook.com>events

Much is happening at this top international show and of course companies are releasing , amongst them are BROKEN TOAD and this is one as an exclusive to celebrate the shows anniversary.

The release is very poignant and emotional in subject choice and yet it has a message of hope in my opinion telling us to look at the worlds troubled past and look to the future .

Kris from Broken Toad has always released something different ( just look at the website !!!) but this one has in his words " a little more meaning behind it " .

The subject was a worry to Kris and he fully understands and respects individuals thoughts and in no way wishes to capitalise on the events surrounding Anne , wishing only for it to be a memorial to an often forgot person .

Kris has tried to be totally respectful , and to do justice to the subject which has a deeper meaning to Broken Toad.

Again in his words and which I totally agree with : "We cannot let people forget about the horrors and tragedy she endured "

Note: The release is ONLY available over the period 16th-22nd October via the webstore and also at Broken Toads stand ( L2 at SMC) , after that it will be removed from sale.

The subject release is Anne Frank

Lets have a small amount of background on Anne
  • Anne was born Annelies Marie Frank on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Otto and Edith Frank.
  • Eyes are said to be a greeny brown with dark brown almost black hair and being 1.63m in height
  • Otto Frank fled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where he had business connections. The rest of the Frank family followed Otto, with Anne being the last of the family to arrive in February 1934
  • During the first half of July, Anne and her family went into hiding in an apartment which would eventually hide four Dutch Jews as well—Hermann, Auguste, and Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer.
  • For two years, they lived in a secret attic apartment behind the office of the family-owned business at 263 Prinsengracht Street, which Anne referred to in her diary as the Secret Annex.
  • On August 4, 1944, the Gestapo discovered the hiding place after being tipped off by an anonymous Dutch caller.
  • That same day, Gestapo official SS Sergeant Karl Silberbauer and two Dutch police collaborators arrested the Franks. The Gestapo sent them to Westerbork on August 8. One month later, in September 1944, authorities placed the Franks, and the four others hiding with them, on a train to the Auschwitz Selected for labor due to their youth, Anne and her sister, Margot were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp near Celle, in northern Germany, in late October 1944.

  • Both sisters died of typhus in March 1945, just a few weeks before British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen on April 15, 1945.

The final entry :

00000000.jpg

Millions of children suffered persecution , only a small number wrote diaries and journals that have survived. In these accounts, the young writers documented their experiences, confided their feelings, and reflected on the trauma they endured during these nightmare years.

While in hiding, Anne kept a diary in which she recorded her fears, hopes, and experiences. Found in the secret apartment after the family was arrested, the diary was kept for Anne by Miep Gies, one of the people who had helped hide the Franks.

Anne's diary was published after the war in many languages originally being called Diary of a Young Girl and Anne Frank has become a symbol for the lost promise of the children who died in the Holocaust.

The house they existed in is now a museum and more details can be found at www.annefrank.org .
Of course there are many books and also You Tube articles to watch ...all giving an insight into Anne and her short life and the legacy she has given the world.

This has been a very personal and moving research as I had not long finished reading the diary .

You also get a credit card sized addition regarding the scourge of the earth ..recasters ...nice one Broken Toad .

Prep

With so few pieces I looked hard for casting lines and could find none the casting is super smooth all over , no blemishes or air holes to deal with ...as expected really as after looking at previous releases the in house casting is very skilled.

There is a casting remnant to remove from underneath ..and thats it apart from choosing you display post and drilling a hole.

Torso

This is the upper part of Anne from just above her waist , looking straight ahead and gripping her precious diary , the head is slightly over on the left with her hair held back tidy and with that smile as seen in so many pictures.

The hair is well shaped with a hair clip holding it back on the right falling onto her shoulders naturally , its a side parting carefully done , the volume of the hair is full n shape .

Facial features are very good indeed , delicate and innocent looking , mouth slightly open smiling in hope for the future , good work on the nose shape and the ear ( only one shows!!)and the eyes themselves , the forehead is full and open , the whole face has the period look .

Her thin neck is nicely shaped with good contours .

Moving down she wears a coat with lapels , really good undercuts and folds , under this we see a blouse , the collar is laced in details .

In the centre she holds the beloved diary in here right hand , the left holding the left arm at the wrist .

The hands are well shaped and sitting naturally .

Nameplate

Well cast and no imperfection in the shape of the Star of David , sharply defined raised edges with the name in the centre ...all clearly raised .

Anne Frank 007.jpg

Some might choose not to use this but it is a good addition to include .

Final Thoughts

This is a very well sculpted and cast release , nicely presented , perhaps not to all taste's but very touching and moving and a powerful thought provoking piece paying tribute to both Anne and all those that lost so much in the conflict ...never forget them all .

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (y)

Don't forget its only available on line from 16-22 October and also at SMC over the show weekend ( stand L2)

A % of the sale price will be donated to the Anne Frank House and Museum

One heck of a challenge :bringing off such a poignant and loaded subject to both look the part and convey so much more in symbolism. Not sure yet that it works..for me the book detracts...painting will be just as challenging as the sculpting ..thr artist who does box art would most certainly be throwing it out for discussion..

Certainly an interesting genre: subjects bearing the load of interpretation as well as representation.

Full marks to Broken Toad..

Very interesting and original release. Thanks for the excellent review. It allows a better look at the sculpt and to be frank (no pun intended) I a not too impressed by the likeness. Perhaps it looks better when painted, but to me it doesn't shout Anne Frank. The hair volume could have been made fuller, for example, as in her iconic picture.
Anyway, thanks again for the review. Surely an attractive choice of subject.
