Hi guys,

I tried to paint miniatures a few times and come back to it every now and then. I have to admit though that I always found it tiring to paint these small parts and pieces. But i loved both the sculpts in itself and the blendings, some artists are able to create on such small figurines.

Recently I worked with pastel pencils on pastelmat quiet a lot and tried to draw miniatures on paper.

Now here is my question:
Is it allowed to draw a miniature from a sculptor on paper and to publish images on the internet? Is it a copyright infringement? Is selling these pictures for money dubious?

I did not find other sources to answer these questions, so I am trying it this way.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Monte

A BIG WELCOME to PF

If your going to copy a company’s image then I would recommend contacting them direct and then when drawn always credit the company

Copyright is a concern without a doubt with artists and the company’s protecting their work of course

As for selling to a friend I see no issues but not if your making money through selling copied images

Note these are my thoughts and I’m no way a legal expert

Do share the figures you paint

It’s good to have you with us , ( I only do busts ! )....share the PF word , all are very welcome to join ..no matter what's modelled with figures, fantasy , warhammer, war game figures

Have a good look around and enjoy , there’s threads on both Airfix and Historex builds along with much more

Do ask anything someone will know...feel free to message me with questions

Lots of different sections to look at including traditional and 3 D sculpting , competitions , WIP's , References , Painting techniques and so much more

There are threads in Welcome Aboard about how to do things including posting pics on PF but do contact me always happy to help

We have a Marketplace where after members have contributed 50+ posts can use to sell , request if anyone has a model to sell etc...You might also pick up some rather good bargains !

We have V Bench for WIP's and also a Completed part ,reference section and much more

There's also Painting techniques where you will find much about Acrylics and Oils

ALL figures are welcome and of course Vignettes & Diorama ( we run friendly competitions if you wish as well , one which is a bi monthly comp where there are 3 classes to choose in which to enter )

Look forward to seeing your modelling no matter what you paint or sculpt .......its all about having fun

Happy bench-time

Monte,

Like Nap I have no knowledge of the legality of what you propose but a lot of sculptors do what you are doing in reverse.

Now I don't kn0w if they get permission from the copyright owner but I suspect most do.

It would be only polite if you also cleared it but who owns the rights to an image of a painted piece? The person who painted it or the producer of the miniature?

Bill

Copyright is a minefield and it's simpler to seek permission in advance.
You may well find that what you propose is straightforward as compared to copying anothers painting or text.
