Hello to members of Planet Figure!

I just got into figure painting about a month ago. I've been building scale model planes and such since I was a kid, but I've always avoided painting figures. Somehow I got interested in larger scale figures, so I read a ton of posts on PF, watched many vids, and bought a few figures/busts. Now here I am.

I'm mainly interested in painting samurai, medieval historical/fantasy, and maybe some sci/fi. I hope to learn lots here. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the show Chris - you're sure to find an endless source of great advice for whatever questions you have. Looking forward to seeing some of your work here soon.

Hi Chris,

Large scale figure are much harder than they look. They are also considerably more expensive to buy.

My advice would be start with some relatively cheap 120mm (1/16th scale) plastic figures by Miniart or Dragon to develop your face painting skills and practice your techniques.

For most of us the challenge to paint faces in any scale is still daunting, however the large scale figures are much more challenging because everything is visible.

Welcome Chris, I've just been looking at your bust painting over on the forums and your painting is very creditable(y). Hope you enjoy being here and keep posting:).
Best wishes, Gary.

Hmmm, I hadn't considered that. Thanks for the tip, Tony.

Hello Chris! and welcome.(y)

I agree with Tony! Start with middle ground stuff @ 120mm. From there you can work higher or lower in scale, this is dependent on what you truly feel the most comfort with.

PS Guess what I paint!!!

Mark and Tony: I guess I'll be shopping for some 120mm stuff at IPMS Nats next week! I do have in my stash a 1/16 scale Samurai from Miniart. I'm a long way off from trying to paint a Samurai, but I can practice painting his face in the meantime.

Nap: I just have the one bust, 1/10 B-17 Waist Gunner from Young Miniatures. Sorry, I don't have a Napoleon bust. ;)

As for oils vs acrylics, I have experience with both. I use oil paints for weathering my scale models, so I have some experience using them. Unfortunately, when I tried painting a mini with oils, the paint just wouldn't stick to the acrylic undercoat. Since that experiment failed, I'm attempting to paint my bust with acrylics (see my thread in the getting started forum). I'm enjoying working with acrylics, so that's probably what I will stick with.

Cheers all

Chris
