Hi Figureteers!

I found a torn out page from an old Military Modelling that I had kept. It was the "Stan Catchpole workshop" with tips on modelling, this page dealing with folds and crevices. Quite good and educational.

I know there were more of his tips. Can one find them in a book or similar? Do anyone know in which numbers/years he published his workshop?

Cheers

He did publish a book of many or all of his workshops and I mamaged to latch on to a copy years ago............still refer to it too.

Glad you guys reminded me! I just dug out my copy of "The complete Modelling Workshop". Mine was published by Squadron/Signal and it has plenty of useful tips and techniques.

Men, would not a repeat of Stan Catchpole,s ideas go down well to-day.... went and fished out my copy,,, Ill read it in bed tonight........O yes, looking at some of the scale drawing in the small format mags, dont see them to-day reckon they would also go down well A!... Phil..

I would definitly buy me a copy of that book, if it not should raise the same amount as the Hunnicutt books.

That what I like about Stans tips as well as Shepherd Paines book. They still hold the ground. Ive bought Sheps book about dioramas for about 20 years ago and Im still using it on regular bases.

Cheers

Stan Catchpoles Modelling Workshop run from issues September76 to May 85. I use to look forward to his tips, I think there were over 150 different articles.

I too have the Squadron issued version. I still pull it's well worn cover out and read it now and then. It was and still is full of great tips. I "inherited" mine long ago from a modeler who now lives in my memory. He told me, "Jim, if you want to learn how to build anything, take this book. It'll teach you all you need to know". Because of that, The Complete Modelling Workshop is one of my most cherished books I own. Great topic and thanks for taking me down memory lane.

Here's to you Mitch (y)

Absolutely a great book. I had to shovel a couple inches of dust off my copy!
I do remember being young when I bought it.

The Stan Catchpol Workshop! What a great little resource this is, or was in my case; why oh why did I ever lend my copy of this to someone, with the inevitable result...

There's still a lot of really worthwhile info in this even today, and Stan's <cough> Bryan Fosten's drawings are great.

I've got the Squadron reprint of this. It is a terrific resource for basic to advanced tips. Some of the tips are dated, but can easily be adapted to today's materials.

I keep meaning to write to Military Modelling and ask them to republish Stan Catchpol's column. I learnt the basics of scratchbuilding from his articles. After I post this I'm going to draft my letter to Military Modelling. Anyone care to join me?
