Jail Break With A Stolen Bundeswehr Tank...

On April 4, 1993, Lothar Luft, who murdered three women, was released from the Schwalmstadt prison...

...liberated in a spectacular way.

A friend and ex-prisoner, the 33-year-old mechanical engineer Hans-Joachim Horn...

... steals from the Bundeswehr barracks in Schwalmstadt the night before...

... a "Fuchs" armored transport vehicle...

... and and drives with it to the prison...:

Horn has never driven a tank and later praises its excellent handling characteristics, saying that the "Fuchs" is easier to drive than his own "Golf"...!

Horn doesn't even have to "crack" the tank, he manages to start the vehicle with a simple "Golf" ignition key. The Bundeswehr didn't find out for a long time - until a soldier living in Ziegenhain (a district of Schwalmstadt) happened to see the tank driving past under his window and called the police.

On the way to the prison, an overzealous passer-by even stops the traffic so that the tank can drive freely.

Around noon, the tank breaks through four secured steel gates and stands in the prison yard...:

Lothar Luft - previously initiated - is already waiting.

Horn and Luft drove 30 kilometers in the tank, and the police lost track of them. They leave the "Fuchs" behind in a forest...:

Luft flees to France.

Shortly thereafter, his helper Horn was recognized and arrested in Frankfurt am Main.

Lothar Luft finds shelter in the French forests - but not for long:

On July 17, 1993, he helps a mother with her injured children. She recognizes him on a wanted poster. A few hours later, Luft is arrested.

The actual scandal, namely that a tank can be stolen from the middle of a military depot in a barracks secured by armed guards, which can also be started with a simple car key, then occupied the German public for weeks...

I've always fancied having a drive of one of those massive "Oshkosh" tank transporters. They have them at a local Royal Logistics Corps depot near me. I'll pop along with my Kia ignition key and see if it will work.

Crazy ....as you do let's steal a vehicle right from the barracks....couldn't make it up !

Must have been well planned though

Cheers Martin

I remember that from the old days - you could start pretty much any old tractor with a nail in the ignition lock.

But I really thought the Bundeswehr would have made technical advances...

:X3:

Yeah - I had a 1958 Morris Minor which would start with a paperclip in the ignition slot. Not an issue as only an idiot would have wanted to steal it!

Just noticed - I've got a "Fuchs" kit in the stash - hmmmm...
