Has anyone checked out the above site? I've just found it ,and was wondering are these done by the original painter,as i know most of the people's work illustrated.Seem really expensive as well.

To be honest Brian they are very well painted and about on a par with what you would expect to pay for a Russian Painted figure. They come in various grades for example a well painted 54mm mounted figure would be around £200 a museum quality in the same size would be around £500. They have a very nice Andrea Mounted Prussian Hussar in 90mm that I have been watching at around £1300. There are collectors out there happy to pay for these things.
I have five pieces by Olga Zernina who I consider to be one of the best painters out there, her busts are now fetching £400-500. and figures also. But she does do sublime freehand work mainly on Japanese subjects.

See you in a couple of weeks....Keith

Any I've sold are about half the prices they're charging, but I'm led to believe that they have many artists on their books ,then they whack on their profit, hence the high prices.See you soon mate.

Price, I suppose it's that they are effectively a retail business and are charging what the market will bear.
I have to say I'm not a great fan of the style, finding much of the work even on campaign / active pieces too decorative for my taste. Indeed some verge on the ornamental, but for those collectors who appreciate a cleaner more decorative style of painting, their work is unsurpassed.

I agree Del, it is not everyone's taste and I have some examples in my collection of the mainly "mural on tin" style as examples of what can be achieved with a paint brush and years of training.

I particularly like Olga's work as she has made the transition to a more realistic natural style with light and shade. I have a couple of Celts painted by her which are on a par with anything I see at the international shows. Her Japanese work is well researched from actual illustrations of Japanese art. There are many other Russian Artists posting on PF producing fabulous work and one noticeable piece recently posted is currently on Attica for a shade over £2000.

I agree that some of it is overpriced in my opinion but conversely I have been quoted silly money by some Painters for work of lesser quality. I find in general that those like Brian who do not rely on the hobby for income are happy to sell their work at affordable prices and I feel privileged to have in the collection Medal winning and published pieces by Brian and many other UK and continental artists.

As you say Del....... "Price, I suppose it's that they are effectively a retail business and are charging what the market will bear", however I might add that some of the pieces take an eternity to sell.

Hello everyone!

I'm Ivan, founder of Attica Miniatures studio. Thank you for your interest in our works. I've just found this thread by accident and decided to take some time to write about my studio. Hope all these make our approach clearer.

As Brian has already noticed, most of miniatures marked as implemented in museum painting quality on our website, are the works of the gifted Russian artists who you may know from Putty and Paint and other sources. We do cooperate with them, implementing all the organizational work (managing orders, PR & advertising, paying taxes, etc.) which is not of course free of charge.

We've launched an eBay store two years ago with my wife and grew to a full-time painting studio which efficiently provides fair pay for our artists' work. That's especially important for the artists who work in the lower priced segments, which we mark as art and collectible painting quality. Most of them are twice as old as I, don't speak English and keep apart from the digital technologies so there are few opportunities for them to get interesting orders from abroad. And there are not many manufacturers in Russia which can offer them a good salary as the demand on pricy collectibles is limited there.

As for the painting style, I personally prefer the realistic European one, but there are a lot of customers who like bright decorative figures. I suppose these pieces are mainly purchased by non-collectors or as gifts. However, all the custom orders implemented by my studio are striving for the true historical accuracy.

Having done some commission work over the years....I have always been intrigued by the pricing structure...and...at times...confounded by it.
I have one friend in particular....have known him for 40 odd years now....and he has collected figures for thirty years now....his most expensive piece was £200.
I have painted a number of pieces for him...never charging for the actual painting...instead I have always taken kits as the payment.
He brought 'Attica' to my attention last year...I must say....price apart....some very nice painting.
Like Keith...I very much enjoy 'Olga's' work....but £400 - £500...I could never justify it...but will admit to a touch of envy.
Having seen Brian's attitude to pricing I have to say he is very genuine in what he offers for the money....unlike a great many I have come across.
I guess at the end of the day it all comes down to how we perceive a piece...and it's worth to us as an individual.

Hi Ron, I agree totally with your comments, I was lucky enough to get hold of some of Olga's pieces before she established her reputation and without unlimited resources have been unable to buy any since. I find that there are many painters both here and in Europe who paint for the joy of it and are happy to pass on their pieces for realistic prices. My collection is over 500 pieces and I don't see them as money. Being realistic they are almost impossible to post around the world unless like the Russians you are geared up for it and I am resigned to the fact that the collection will one day end up in a skip meanwhile I continue to buy a few and enjoy ownership of things that I am unable to do justice to myself.

The Russian pieces are much admired for their intricacy while others for their artistry, I also have a small collection of Drummers (a particular favourite) by First Legion, these are from the Toy Soldier Market but superbly painted and almost certainly as good as I could paint myself in 54mm.

I am considering putting together a website to display them as they cover a large range of painting styles and figures from the past ranging from Graham Bickertons pieces for Post Militaire up to the modern Era.
