"I'm an Englishman in...Moscow"

On August 24, 1553 the English ship "Edward Bonaventure" under Captain Richard Chancellor ...

... drops anchor in the Dvina estuary on the Russian coast ...:

On May 10th, the "Edward Bonaventure" left England with two other ships - on the orders of the 15-year-old and already terminally ill (tuberculosis) English King Edward VI….

... to find a northern route (the so-called "Northeast Passage") to India.

When the Russian tsar Ivan IV ("the Terrible") found out about it, he immediately invited Captain Chancellor to Moscow!

The captain later writes about it:

"Moscow itself is very big. I think the city as a whole is bigger than London and its suburbs. But it is very messy and out of order. All the houses are made of wood, which is very dangerous because of fire. It is a beautiful castle in Moscow, the high walls of which are made of bricks. The king lives in the castle, which has nine beautiful churches and their clergy. "

In Moscow, Chancellor is received by the tsar, to whom he gives a letter of recommendation from his king.

Tsar Ivan is warmth in person and does not allow himself to be dissuaded from personally showing the English captain his treasury!

In February 1554 Chancellor was allowed to sail home - in his luggage he had a letter from the tsar to the British king, in which Ivan asked for an ambassador to be sent.

Edward VI. however died on July 6th 1553, so that his successor, Queen Mary I. (Mary Tudor) receives the letter ...:

The following year, the first British ambassador, Sir Jerome Horsey...

... traveled to Moscow. The picture shows his reception by Tsar Ivan ...:

August 24, 1553 is considered to be the beginning of diplomatic relations between England and Russia.

The building in which the first ambassador to Moscow resided is still standing today ...:

Today, of course, a memorial commemorates the landing of Captain Chancellor in the nearby city of Arkhangelsk ...:
