"Lebe wohl, Deutschland!"

On August 31, 1994, the last members of the "Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany" (GSSD) or "Western Group of the Soviet Armed Forces" (WGT) were officially bid farewell by Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Russian President Boris Yeltsin with a ceremony in Berlin...:

The Soviet troops in the GDR represented the largest contingent of troops that an occupying power abroad had ever maintained for such a long period of time!

Here is the complete structuring in 1991 ...:

The Soviet troops occupied 777 barracks in 276 locations on the territory of the GDR. This included 47 airfields and 116 training areas. The WGT counted in January 1991 according to its own information
Most of the sites were in what is now the state of Brandenburg. The high command of the GSSD / WGT was in Wünsdorf.

As well as other directly subordinate associations.

As many of the names and designations (e.g. "Guard") already say: Without exception, elite formations!

The equipment on weapons and equipment in 1991 included:

• 4,200 tanks
• 8,200 armored vehicles
• 3600 guns
• 106,000 other motor vehicles
• 690 aircraft
• 680 helicopters
• 180 missile systems
• 95,500 vehicles
• 677,000 tons of ammunition

Also in 1991, the Western Group comprised 337,800 soldiers in 24 divisions, divided between the above-mentioned five land armies and one air army.
There were also 208,400 family members of officers and civilian employees, including around 90,000 children.

The last commander of the Western Group was - from December 13, 1990 to August 31, 1994 - Major General Matvej Prokopyevich Burlakov ...:

Here Boris Jeltsin pays him his reference on August 31, 1994 ...:

The Russians say goodbye friendly ...

However, they leave behind "scorched earth" - their barracks and accommodations are uninhabitable because even the windows with frames, sanitary facilities and in some cases even the wall and floor tiles have been removed beforehand.

Huge environmental pollution is left behind in the floors of practice areas and other locations.

However, these are not exclusively attributable to the Red Army, as the locations in many cases were former Wehrmacht properties that were used immediately after 1945 ...

Before - and this should not be forgotten either - members of the Western Group, from general to ordinary soldiers, had used almost every opportunity since the fall of the Wall to somehow get hold of the coveted D-Mark.

Uniforms, medals, vehicles, weapons and entire weapon systems - almost everything was available ...

The Commander-in-Chief Burlakow had pushed hard!

Boris Jeltsin promoted Burlakov to deputy defense minister after his return to Russia, but dismissed him in February 1995 for corruption and involvement in the murder of a journalist who had just researched this corruption.

Burlakov was never held criminally responsible and is still officially considered "innocent" to this day. He died on February 8, 2011 in Moscow.

Great info Martin, and quality photo back-up. I've visited a few of those places post-unification. I didn't realise the immense scale of Soviet occupation - it must have been pretty quiet in some parts when they all went back home.
