With Double Mesures ...!

During the so-called "Boxer Rebellion".

While the embassy district in Beijing is being besieged by Chinese rebellions against foreigners (the so-called "boxers") and regular Chinese military, an international "reaction force" from eight nations is fighting its way to Beijing!

First the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei Ho River were fought down - now the Japanese...

...Russians...

...US-Americans...

...British...

...und French troops...

... move towards Beijing.

The national jealousies between the various troops are enormous!

Nobody likes to take orders from another nation - at most "requests" or "suggestions" - and the high commanding "World Marshal" Count Alfred von Waldersee, who was enforced by Kaiser Wilhelm II ...

... is still on the high seas! And with him the German reaction force, the so-called "East Asia Corps" ...

Germany as well as Austria-Hungary participate in the campaign therefore only with small divisions of marine infantry (Germany with the 3rd Seebataillon) from Tsingtao ...:

The Italians sent a couple of Bersaglieri ...:

At the same time, every nation is intent on ensuring that “their” soldiers are always “in the lead” and reap more “fame” than the others.

This limited communication and the constant national jealousy naturally have consequences ...:

On August 6, 1900, fighting broke out between the "International Reaction Force" and Chinese regular troops ...

... at the place Jangtsun, where the railway line, on which the Allies advance, crosses the Pei-Ho river ...:

The Chinese sit in developed positions - trenches - and have artillery!

After a long palaver, it was agreed that the British and the Americans should lead the attack with the support of the French, the Russians should provide artillery support - the Japanese are in reserve.

Now there is one of the typical misunderstandings that are so characteristic of the action

The Russians - they are commanded by General Nikolaj Linewitsch ...

... ask the British about the desired range of fire. Their commander, General Alfred Gaslee ...

... allows the distance to be transmitted. But only a number.

But the British calculate in inches (2.54 cm), feet (30.48 cm), yards (91.44 cm), furlong (201.17 m), mile (1609.344 m) and leage 4828.032 m ) ...

... and the Russians in "Wershok" (4.445 cm), "Arshin" (7.112 dm), "Sashen" (2.1336 m), Werst (1.0668 km) and "Milja" (7.4676 km)

Simply transmitting a simple expanse is not enough - even if nobody bothered to think about it!

It comes, as it must!

The first shots of the Russians hit the middle of the storming 14th US Infantry Regiment, which is led by Colonel Aaron Dagett ...:

Four US soldiers are killed, eleven are wounded, some seriously (six more will die later). Fortunately, the Russians only have light field artillery with them ...

... otherwise things would have turned out even worse.

In the evening the Allies won the battle anyway ...

Good post Martin. I have read a fair bit on the various "international" excursions in China, most of which ended up as massive looting operations. Of course, it was the predatory nature of the various European nations and their desire to squeeze as much out of China as they could, that led to the "Boxer" uprising.
