The OOP Ft Duq Captain 3rd Bristol County Massachusetts Militia figure and I am toying with the idea of changing it to a color bearer of the militia company from the town where was born and spent my early childhood. Because it is such a beautiful sculpt (and OOP) and don't really want to do allot of conversion work to the figure; so my question is this, is it concievible that a color bearer in 1776(the two companies disbanded when the army retreated to New Jersey) would have worn a sash and sword or were these strictly badges of officer status?
Here's a picture of the figure for those unfamiliar with it.

Matt, Though at the bottom of the officer food chain they were officers noe the less. A sash, sword, and gorget were the marks of an officer. So he could have a sash and or gorget to go with his sword. I remember another painter putting a flag with figure I just can't remember who. ~Gary

That flag and that re-enactment group, form some of my earliest memories is probably one of the reasons I choose the career path that I did. I think I still have a musket ball and some other trinket that I got from one of their encampments from when I was a kid back in the mid '70s.

Follow on question, what size would that flag be for a this figure (in inches/mm's)?

I agree with Gary that an ensign would be due the insignia of an officer, but remember, too, that resources were tight, and it's possible that he might have only the sash, or maybe a differently colored cockade, to mark him as an officer, especially in 75/76. Just something to think about, not an argument against the point.

Prost!

This is the reason I am sticking with the sash, that is sculpted on the figure and the kit supplied sword. Since I am depicting militia ensign very early in the war (summer of '76) I am not going for the ragged rebel look, but at the same time, I am depicting a member of a militia so I am not going for all kinds of fru fru. Thanks for the input, it's always appreciated.
