Is anyone able to recommend a decent supplier of wooden bases/plinths? I'm after something half decent, but at the same time something that wont cripple the bank.

Don't overlook the homemade option if it might suit the budget! Cheapest option by some margin more than likely (y)

You can get loads more advice if you want it from dedicated woodworking forums if you have a hunt around online, plenty of viable alternatives on finishing from hand-rubbed wax to a spray-on polyurethane varnish at the two extremes.

Thanks einion, In the future I would like to make my own. However at the moment I simply just dont have the tools for the job.

If you start with the simplest base shapes - cylinders and cubes/blocks, cut from existing stock - one saw (Homebase, B&Q, any local DIY centre) is all you'd need in the way of tools. Add some abrasive paper and finish and you'd be good to go, shouldn't set you back more than about 20 quid.

If you already have a hacksaw, although it's not intended for wood that'll do quite well in a pinch

I too use bases from Ron Tamburinni, they are by far the best bases I have ever used and good value for money,Ron gives an excellent service and will also make them if you want a particular size,as del has mentioned by the time you have purchased all the materials for making your own the money could have been better spent on a really good looking base.
INMO if you spend hours painting a piece your'e proud off why display it on a cheap base made yourself.

I've always used Chippy myself as I like to see the look of pain flit over his face when I say " I like this one mate but could you just....." :sneaky: In all seriousness I don't think you will go far astray with any of the recommendations given.
