This is the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken. For a while I wasn’t sure if it would ever get done. Started last June, it’s about the only thing I’ve worked on until completion in February. I plan to display it at Chicago’s World Expo in July.

The flat is inspired by Johann Baptist Seele’s painting Battle Between Russian and French Soldiers. It represents the September 25, 1799 action by Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov’s Russian troops against General Claude Lecourbe’s French rearguard. In this “Battle for the Devil’s Bridge” the French tried to defend the narrow bridge over the Schötlenen Gorge that gave access to the St. Gothard Pass and Switzerland. The Russians persevered, forcing the French retreat and withdrawal from northern Italy. Editor: Dr. Peter Dangschat. Engraver: Rolf Baumgarten.

I consider myself new to flats and am still learning. Comments and feedback is most welcome.

Very well painted and presented.
Whatever you've learnt, you've excelled in its application on this piece.

Cheers,
Andrew
