I've seen in progress paintings before and artists approach tonal paintings in different ways. Some just tone the white canvas/board with a wash with the drawing still visible. Another method includes outlining the major portions of subject(s) along with a tone over this. I spent most of the time painting in the face and less time on the rest of the subject.
