Some WIP photos of a Belgian lancer in 1/16th scale. The M1889 Mauser 'Allege' carbine was converted from ReeDee's Mauser rifle. The head, boots and horse are all from kits. The horse was converted from a Verlinden, the rear legs reinforced with metal rod. All the original Napoleonic saddle and tackle were removed and the correct equipment made and installed. Some of the equipment on the horse and rider are castings made from originals. The excellent castings were done by Bob Stein.

In 1914, the Belgian cavalry used a bamboo lance of 1888 design 2810mm in length with a four-sided metal 'blade' head and metal cover on the bottom of the lance. It had leather wrappings to aid in handling and a short round wood piece to allow the lancer to hold the lance in its stirrup cup more easily. As near as I can understand, the wood piece was usually placed under the arm with the leather strap being wrapped around the wood. If anyone has a better understanding of this, please let me know. To make the lance I started with a basswood rod of suitable scale diameter, then sanded it to simulate the uneven 'bamboo' growth patterns. Next I glued on the four-sided blade head casting and added epoxy strips to simulate the leather strap with the short plastic rod wrapped around the strap. While trying to deploy his lance to fight off his enemy, the lancer has allowed the strap and short wood piece to come loose and it is flying loosely up behind the lancer's right arm.

I used my normal mix of Kneadatite and MagicSculpt except for some bits which were done in various shades of brown MS.

Comments and critique welcome!

Hope you like it!

All the best,
Dan
