I'm painting this from JMD. The cap badge appears to be the Black Watch. Now here's my problem, all the illustrations I have for Black Watch show red & black hose, or plain khaki. These are well, as pictured. So which is correct?
Thanks,
Carl.

Hi carl,

Sorry mate I have more questions than answers for you, is this a new JMD figure and is it in thier usual 65mm ish scale ? also where did you get him, love the stance its awesome.

I also think the black watch had red black hose

thanks

chris

As far as the Black Watch is concerned; the red and white squares of the diced hose were outlined in black for the solders/infantry. Members of the regimental band, such as pipers; wore diced hose that had squares of red and black

The red and white diced hose of other kilted regiments e.g; Gordons, Seforths, Camerons etc, did not have the black outline, but there band members did wear the red and black diced hose.

I believe you can go with either, but that the red/white diced ones would been done away with for front line duty pretty early on.

Thanks for the input chaps, much appreciated. It's at least 1917 as there are 2 service stripes on the sleeve.
Cheers,
Carl.

The spats and diced hose is correct for a early war look. Once trench warfare became the norm; the spats and diced hose were replaced with short putties and khaki hose for front line service.

Dear Carl,

Thanks again for your help. I found this on my travels, although it's Gordon.

Carl, the dice hose would be red/black. Are the spats cut straight across the front? Thats the way they should be rather than the normal rounded shape.
Nice job your doing.
Barrie.
