The author of the booklet are known since 30 years as a renewed expert on the culture and history of the Native Americans since 30 years. Beside a number of books he regularly wrote for the „Whispering Wind Magazine“ in the USA, a publication which had a very good reputation especially among the Native Americans. „The Tribes of the Sioux Nation“ offers a very good representation of the history and culture of the Sioux Nation. The book is well organised into the following chapters: The introduction with the early history of the Sioux, followed by a presentation of the nomenclature and the tribal structure of the Sioux. Other chapters shows the history of the Sioux until the Laramie peace treaty, and a portrait of the important chiefs. On chapter is dedicated to the Santee uprising 1862 – 63, where the English author shows a objectivity, hardly to find by a good number of other books. Another chapter gives a good impression of the violent actions between 1870 – 90, followed by a chapter of the first reservation period. A highlight of the book is the chapter of the religion of the Sioux, the social organisation of the Teton and the material culture and clothing.

From the first sentence the book give the impression, that it is written by a competent author, who not only had a very good acknowledgement about the subject, but also the needed sympathetic understanding of the Indian heritage. The book is very interesting to read and gives compared with the number of pages a lot of information. A special recommendation should be given to the author for the easy to understand description of the social organisation of the Teton and the feeling he showed with the description of the Lakota religion.

The description of the difference between the cloth of the Dakota, Nakota and Lakota is very interesting for everybody who want to paint a correct Sioux Indian and not a “Hollywood fantasy” Indian. The beautiful colour plates are created by Jonathan Smith gives a good impression of the material culture of these people and a lot of ideas for the figurine painters. As a conclusion, this book is a must for everyone who are interested in the history and culture of the American Indians as well as for every figurine painter who are interested in this historical periode.
This book is excellent, highly recommended, fife stars of fife possible stars!
