Hey guys,

If you took a look in my Vbench, you'd see my new project..the 4 verlinden USAAF bomber crew, and i was wondering if anyone's ever painted brown leather flyer uniforms/flyer jackets in vallejo's before ?

I'm having trouble finding the right colours before i get started on the figures...

Hey Alex!

What I would start with would be a base of Flat Brown + Black, then add more brown for general highlights and probably mix some Light Tan with the Flat Brown for hi highlights. Add more black for shadows. Try it and see how it works.

I know the flat brown is rather reddish for a brown, but is it going to have that really red tone the uniforms seem to hold ?

since they're so small and fragile..i'm a little worried to have to strip them (lol)

I just finished filling the gaps and things..i'll get a photo up later

Thanks for the help

I think by adding the tan to the brown it will result in a more reddish brown. But if you still would want more of a reddish tint, just mix in red with your base color.

Hmm..okay...which tan are you referring to ?
i have deck tan...or a beige, or iraqi sand...not sure which one to use

Hell if you really want to make it redish use Cavalry Brown as your base, add black then highlight with a yellowish light tan, much like 837 Sand Light. Or you can always mix your own by mixing white + yellow + dab of light brown or you can leave out the brown for a little more zap to the color. Experiment a little and you will find something that will please you :)

Hi, Alex...I don't use Vallejo, but rather Humbrol...I have a recent posting of the Verlinden B-17 Waist Gunner, 120 mm - the leather flight jacket was created with 6 various shades of browns and reds from Humbrol. Brown Bess as a base coat, then w/ black(80%) and red leather for the deepest recesses. I worked up the highlighted gradually by doing a mix of blending and wet-brushing, using Red Leather, Tan, Orange, and Flesh (for the elbows, knees and seat of the pants), all w/ a touch of brown bess mixed in to maintain the same tonal/hue quality.

Don't know if trying to cross-over color matches would work, or the fact that it's enamel vs. acrylic?

The poses of the figures are really great...looking forward to more on this project!
