Hi Gents,

I've been a longtime user of W/Newton Series 7 brushes for years, I use both regular and the minis, whilst the minis are still superb, I have noticed the regulars have dropped off in quality and have been for atleast Eighteen months or more. The tips are splitting, not holding a good point and lack the snappiness of old, they seem to malt hairs also and hence last less longer than they did, the tip problem is becoming an issue.

• I'm looking at the De-Vinci Maestro range, but what series? 10, 11 or 35?! Anybody using them?

• Anybody prefer Raphaels 8404's?

•I've read some reviews on Broken Toads and are also considering them, or maybe to use along side due to there good value.

Apologies if this has been discussed previous and thanks for your thoughts and experiences with these brands.

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

I've tried every brand of brush on the market, including W & N series 7, Broken Toad, Da Vinci etc etc.

I've spend hundreds of dollars over the years chasing the perfect brush and the problem is that I destroy them pretty quickly.

I've decided to buy cheaper brushes in bulk and throw them away as soon as they start to lose their shape and point and use another.

It's a wasteful practice but still cheaper than spending a fortune on the top of the range brushes and getting the same results.

I do the same as Tony - A good quality brush is a real delight, but acrylics are always hard on brushes. (My signwriting sables on the other hand . . . Incidentally these are stored with grease on them after washing so the bristles don't dry out between uses)

Rosemary & co are also worth considering, just to make your choice more confusing ;)
I've been buying generic sables from firestorm games/mdp and these seem to suit my style. Long bristles and holding shape quite well. A bit cheaper too.

I've tried Broken Toad and R&Co Series 33 as replacements for Series 7 but, although they are pretty good, I still find myself reaching for the Series 7. I haven't noticed any drop off in quality but then again I am more painter/decorator than artist so I doubt I would notice.

On the other hand I love R&Co filberts (Series 66) and their spotters (Series 323) which are a great replacement for Series 7 Miniatures. So at the minute my "toolbox" consists of 2 x W&N Series 7 (0 and 2), 2 x Series 323 Spotters (0 and 2) and 2 x Series 66 Filberts (0 and 2). I've found that these cover all my needs.

Ah! the brush question has again reared it's ugly head! ... How many times?

Bang-in a search question, and or (Phrase). There will be a plethora of information coming your way. However, you may well regret this. :D

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll look into it some more, I thought somebody would possibly use Da-Vincis and could reccomend which series to go for.

Tubby-Nuts2 I didn't realise it was such an 'ugly Question' ! Lol .. I've tried searching.

Helo

The Rafael is close to winsor, but they are much bigger, the 00 is the saem size of the 0 from winsor. The Davinci Maestro is a great brush, but not as good for glazes as the w&n série 7.
I have proved a lot of diferent brands, i use to say that they have diferent uses, the Davinci is thiner and don't cary too much paint as w&n, but it is great for precision, to put the paint.
The w&n and Rafael are great for glazes.

Cheers from Brasil

If you want a fuller body DaVinci brush, that holds more paint, you should try their Maestro Series 11 instead.
