I mentioned the release of this book from Thomas Publications a few threads back. If you have an interest in the appearance of the Confederate soldier through the entire war this book fits the bill quite well. The book is made up of three lengthy chapers as follows, Chapter 1, Early War Period, 1861- October 1862, Chapter 2, Middle War Period, October 1862-November 1864, Chapter 3, Late War Period, November 1864-April 1865. Each chapter is fully illustrated with period photographs, Drawings of reconstructed jackets and photographs along with several eyewitness accounts describing the soldiers of both Eastern and Western theater Confederate soldiers. I find the book to be well worth the $16.95 price tag.

While looking through the book I noticed something interesting about the only photograph of reenactors. The one reenactor is none other than Planet Figure's own Jason Whitman. Jason (pictured on the right with the blanket roll) sent me a color copy of this photograph some time ago to add to my reference files. What's interesting is I'm not sure if Jason even knows that it's in the book.~Gary

Hi Gary,

I received my copy on Saturday, it is a good read. I liked the part on page 65 where the Yank is asking the old man for information about the Rebels.

Well, I wouldn't live up to my nickname (my friends from university refer to me as "the beltbuckle guy") if I didn't buy this book. thanks for the review Gary.

Hi,

I have been trying to make contact with Thomas Publications and my emails are always coming back, undelivered.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Also, does anyone know if they accept credit cards and send overseas?

Daniel

Hi Dani...I ordered that book (I payed with PalPal I think..) as soon as Gary mentioned it, as it seemed a good deal for the price...got a confirmation in a day or so and the book arrived in around 9 or 10 days...so they definately ship over seas. It'a a great litle book with some very interesting info and diary extracts, and deals with all the problems that were experienced (and why) to keep the confederacy supplied throughout...I found it an excellent source af interest.

Good luck with your order...

All the best...Roy.

If you have Paypal it's probably the easiest route to go, especially overseas. The book is really interesting as it uses diaries and other eyewitness accounts to describe the confederate soldier through the entire war. I find this book and research done over the past fews years help to put down the "ragged rebel" image or myth that is so often written about. Though it there were times when confederate soldiers were improperly clothed or without footware they were not without abundant stocks of uniforms. The main problem was not so much one of uniforming men in the field as it was one of transporting what was needed. there are some great wartime images showing confederate soldiers, and while they are not "uniform" in apperance is not close to the image of the "ragged rebel".~Gary
