Could some body be so kind, and give me some tips on painting bronze. I have undercoated in GW scorched earth, and thinking of dry brushing, with some very aptly named Antique gold, by Rose. I think I have had this 25 years. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Gave it a go still have to paint the tongue. What do you think?

Hi Carl,
Looks good so far, depends on what look you are after. At the moment it looks quite new, so if that is the condition you want it to look then leave it. If you want a more older and used look, give it a matt lacquer coat or two and then do some washes with Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna. It can then be given a very light drybrush again with your Antique Gold again to pick up on a few highlights. I love the antique colour that you have given it so far.

Hi Carl,
It looks good, you could try a LITTLE bit of a burnt sienna oil wash for shading and make the wash really thin. what's cool if it doesn't look right you can wpe it right off before it dries.

Carl
I echo Rics suggestion re burnt sienna.
Picture a bit small to judge finish but it looks pretty good as it is.
I would imagine that as this would be a treasured item you should 'shade' to replicate reflection rather than weathering.

Derek

Hello Carl,

To make your carnyx look like bronze, you can add washes of RAW (not burnt) UMBER which would add some greenish tinge to your tones.

The tongue was often painted wood and the eyes made of amber or coloured glass.

Hello Carl,

It's indeed one of my babies  and you made a good job of it so far.

Willem (who's currently painting the Daimyo on the other thread) has done a very good version of the Celt bust. It would be interesting to compare notes with him.

Happy painting,
Quang

Hello Carl,

I've done the Celt last year and greatly enjoyed the build and painting of it.
(thanks for the compliment Quang)
I used the box art as a reference and used my imagination on the folding of the plaid (Sagum) for it's folds and creases make it impossible to draw straight lines.

You don't have to use the same colors on the Sagum.
Bright colors were favorite by the Celts so Green, Yellow, Red etc.
Remind that tartan came from these early types of plaid but no more than 3 colors were used. (on the crossing you'll get a mix)
First paint the base color and then start laying down the broad lines (slowly and careful) your pattern will form itself if you start with one line to make a center.
It will be necessary to loose a line here and there but with a bit of attention you'll figure out where that's possible.

Your Carnix looks great and with the little use of raw umber it will be outstanding. The tongue could also be done in a red, wood, or even a blue.
The personal jewelry would be Gold but keep in mind that it would contain Copper thus being in the Red Gold range.
Celts used a natural mix with lime to color their hair white (it's thought that the enemy would fear them for being ghosts).
There is some controversy on the use of tattoos or warpaint but if planning to do something like that use Blue only.
Have fun...

Willem

:)Cheers Willem.
Your rendition is outstanding, certainly gives me some thing to aspire to. I will post some photos on completion.
Thanks again everyone,
Carl.

Sagum painted just requires some shading and highlights. I'm not happy with the head it looks too artificial, I think a bit of stripping is in order, and a bit less contrast in the high and low lights. Not the best of photos.
All criticism welcome, cheers
Carl.
